On the Road Again
This weekend we will be leaving for a month long RV Road Trip, so spent yesterday and today trying to get the gardens ready for an early Fall. Cut off the Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce that was starting to go to seed, and pulled all of the radishes. Then cleaned the bed, added some compost, and planted seeds for the fall lettuce, radishes, and spinach. Tomorrow will be taking down the tomatoes and packing the green ones for later ripening. The bed the tomatoes were in will be planted with the winter cover crop. A neighbor will be stopping by periodically to pick the green beans, peppers, spinach, kale, and chard while we're gone, so all should be well (famous last words...).
Meanwhile, while we are out enjoying this beautiful country, Y'all keep on gardening!

Re: On the Road Again
Returned home from the extended road trip, and found that the gardens experienced 3 nights of hard frost already. The beans, cucumbers, and peppers are all completely done, but the Swiss Chard, Kale, Spinach, Carrots, and Beets are doing great and ready for harvest. Time to start cleaning up the gardens and getting the cover crop of Winter Rye started.
The Green Beans are finished after heavy frost.
The Rainbow Chard is loving the cool weather
The Carrots and Beets are ready for harvest
More Beets ready for harvest
Some more Carrots ready to harvest
The Perpetual Spinach will make some great salads, and some steamed spinach.

Your winter crops look great. Do you have a watering system? Or, do you get enough rain to keep things going while you are on the road?

I have a drip irrigation system installed, but I turned it off before we left for the road. We get enough rain in the fall to keep it going. Last year we were gone the month of July, and I had to leave the irrigation on which was a good thing because it didn't rain the entire time we were gone.

Tomorrow morning we will be headed out for a weekend conference called Becoming an Outdoors Woman. Cool nation-wide program - introduces women to all sorts of outdoor activities ranging from food preservation to scuba, fly fishing/tying flies, using natural items to make jewelry, shooting/archery, outdoor photography, star gazing, etc.
We'll be back late Sunday.

Re: On the Road Again
Hi everyone! I'm home. Got in last night.
Great Becoming An Outdoors Woman conference! 55 women learning about plant & tree id, medicinal herbs, shooting/archery, outdoor cooking, hunting/processing, making jewelry out of natural items, & all sorts of other cool things.
But, boy, are we glad to be home.... Had torrential downpours on Thursday just after we arrived. Then it turned beautiful but cold...
