Rabbit Food Fertilizer Empty Rabbit Food Fertilizer

Post  countrynaturals on 7/6/2019, 12:52 pm

Our sanctuary got a donation of 25 bags of super high-nutrition baby rabbit food that expires next month. Nobody around here can use it, so it was scheduled to be sent to the dump when I yelled NOOOOOOO! I'm thinking it can be used directly as fertilizer, but I am clueless. It's in pellet form, about 3/4" long and slightly bigger around than spaghetti. I would happily grind it up, if that's recommended. Here is the ingredient list. Opinions, advice please. (Our compost heap is in the chicken yard, so I'm wondering if I can sprinkle some in there when I add food scraps to the pile.)

Tried a couple of experiments -- ground it up and mixed it 50/50 with Happy Frog fertilizer. Sprinkled it all over the balcony garden.

Mixed it in water -- 1 part rabbit food to about 5 parts water. That's still dissolving. I think I'll use that mixture on some inside plants.

Interesting....   I would probably compost it in place of alfalfa meal.

It's holding up quite well in water, so I think I'll just spread it on the plants like time-release fertilizer and see what happens. We're also mixing some with the deer food and putting some in kitchen compost, which goes to the chickens. I can't imagine how it could hurt anything anywhere unless it was too concentrated. geek

Suz, The pellets probably won't hurt anything, but the nutrients won't be available for the plant roots until the microbes have done their job breaking it down.

That's good news, right? Makes this super nutritious time-release compost/fertilizer? I was afraid it would be like pouring cereal on the plants and it would just turn to mush and disappear when it got wet, but it's holding its own, nicely. The results should be very interesting. geek

Hmm, in that case I'd better dig it in a little instead of leaving it on top where it will just dry out between waterings and probably disrupt the process. thinking

Hubby made me a batch of compost tea from it. I put it on newly-planted seeds. I should know in a week if that was a good idea or not. geek
