I usta watch Mel on pbs and dream of having my own square foot garden. Working on a boat I couldn't garden I was away from home too much. 18 years ago my sweet Peggy came to live with me and that spring we built our first 4x4 box. It started as an herb bed and later we planted strawberries and then it's final carnation was as our asparagus bed. It's my avatar picture with the dew shining on the ferns. Today we went to lowes bought 2- 2'x12"x12'boards had one cut in half ad one cut with 2-4'3" end boards. The plan is to take out the old box and replace it with a new one. I'll take a few pics as we build and replace our first ever box. I plan to cut the partially rotten boards up and burning them in our fire pit as a kinda send off.
When we have to take out fruit trees and garden things of wood we always honor tehm by burning them in our back yard fire pit seems better to us than just dragging them to the road.

Love it! I either run them through the chipper/shredder to use for mulch, or turn them into biochar to return to the soil. New life begins from the old.....
Never plant without a bucket of compost at your side.

While working on other things as well I got half the ole box off and half the new one built its slow but steady with breaks in this heat 3 3"long screws and about 20 inch and a quarter screws in the corner hardware. For ole box sake I am using the top hardware from it. Harder to get it off but a fitting tribute.
