Catastrophe in my garden.
We were awakened this morning about 02:15 by loud thunder, high winds and lightening. Then.......... Came the hail.
After daylight, my wife went out to assess the damage. When she returned, she asked me not to go outside yet.
I asked her how bad it was. She said the hail had actually stripped most of the leaves off our big elm trees and my potato bed was flattened and the tomatoes were mostly just stalks now. She says it looks like a weed eater went through the garden.
I had just taken a lot of pics of the garden yesterday and thought Lord, how beautiful it is. Surely, the best garden of my lifetime. I will go out shortly and look around after I get my nerves up and will update with pics a little later.
I believe there must be a blessing in all of this somewhere.
Psalm 46:10 He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

It hurts to hear that MrB! We are supposed to get those storms tonight, but I sure hope they weaken on their way over here.

Oh, Mr. B, that's awful. Keep us posted. Fingers crossed that it's not as bad as you fear.

Re: Catastrophe in my garden.
We'll pray for you. I can't ever remember such a hail storm in my life. Going out now to assess damage.OhioGardener wrote:It hurts to hear that MrB! We are supposed to get those storms tonight, but I sure hope they weaken on their way over here.

Mr Booker, I feel for you.
Hopefully the strong established root systems your plants have will make their recoveries swift.

Mr Booker,
Mother Nature can be a real B...then she can be a real sweetheart. (reminds me of those Sour Patch Kids commercials)
On the bright side (and it's a stretch), the stalks and stems still look to be in good shape...at least not broken.
So MN just has to regrow the leaves and then the veggies.
Hopefully that means this storm will just set you back a few weeks in the "Lazarus" garden.

And I was off to such a good start too. I'll go to our local Rural King and Wal-Mart today and see what plants they have left. The stores are about 10 miles away so maybe they didnt get the hail that we did.sanderson wrote:Oh, no!!Heartbreaking

Re: Catastrophe in my garden.
Went to our local Rural King store today and bought two "Pink girl" tomatoes, an Orange pepper and a yellow Pepper and six more sweet potatoes to replace some of my plants. The sweet potatoes really took a beating.

I will keep you updated with some pics. I think the weather is on our side so far. It's been in the 70's and 80's and a fair amount of rain. Maybe the healing process will begin.sanderson wrote:Keep us updated.

So sorry...looks like they might make it, though, not on your original timetable...that must’ve been quite the storm.MrBooker wrote:Went to our local Rural King store today and bought two "Pink girl" tomatoes, an Orange pepper and a yellow Pepper and six more sweet potatoes to replace some of my plants. Yes, looks like some plants might make it but it's not looking good. I have never seen hail that big in this area in my life.Scorpio Rising wrote:So sorry...looks like they might make it, though, not on your original timetable...that must’ve been quite the storm.MrBooker wrote:Went to our local Rural King store today and bought two "Pink girl" tomatoes, an Orange pepper and a yellow Pepper and six more sweet potatoes to replace some of my plants. The Resurrection
The Lord has restored our garden......
About 3 weeks ago we thought our garden was destroyed by the hail storm. Today, it looks like everything is pretty much restored.

Wonderful!
It is amazing how well a plant can recover with an established root system and good care.
