Bamboo
The snow storm wreaked havoc on our bamboo patch. I've never grown bamboo before, so I didn't know what to expect. I thought it would be hard to cut down the broken stalks, but it was easy. The problem may come later if I need sharp edges. I'm afraid the cut ends will fray unless I use a super sharp knife or saw. I'll figure that out, later. Today, I just wanted to get the broken pieces cut off and stored. It's too big a job to do all at once, but good exercise in small doses.
The good news is that I discovered a bunch of new shoots while clearing out the dead stuff. YEE-HAH!
Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with all these 8' bamboo stalks.

Re: Bamboo
Suz, You will have a lifetime supply of bamboo! Once it's established, it's impossible to get rid of it. I saw a neat video on some FB site where the garden plant supports and perimeter fence were made with bamboo. It was somewhere in Asia.

It turns out there are several varieties. Katie has a small patch of beautiful bamboo she brought from her last place. It had actually escaped from a neighbor's yard. That type stays small, bushy, green, and beautiful. It's also hard as oak.
Mine is tall, gangly, pliable, and ugly, but easy to cut and work with. Since yarn is one of my other passions, the wheels are already turning for combining the 2 for garden craft projects.

Found the bamboo gardening video from YouTube! I expect you to build a new salad bar out of the bamboo, barefoot! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prOOC2ZbJE

WOW! Talk about "girl power." That was amazing.

I love this video.sanderson wrote:Found the bamboo gardening video from YouTube! I expect you to build a new salad bar out of the bamboo, barefoot! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prOOC2ZbJE
So now I have 4 questions:
1) How long will it last if I sink my bamboo trellises to the bottom of my boxes?
2) If I harvest above the 2nd node, will it come back?
3) Do I need to age it or treat it or just cut it and use it?
3) What else do I need to know?

For the past 2 years I have used bamboo stakes purchased at Lowe's to support plants, netting, etc., and when I pull them out of the soil at the end of the season most of the bottom of the stake has been consumed by the soil microbes. I only get one year use out of them since they are then too short to use again. Of course, your mileage may vary....

Re: Bamboo
Nutz! Not what I wanted to hear, but definitely what I needed to know. I guess we'll either have to weave the bamboo into the fence or figure out how to put the trellises on the outside of the boxes -- labor intensive either way.OhioGardener wrote:
