I am hoping tonight will be the last cold night. I've covered the basil.

The forecast going forward is looking much better with highs ranging from 72F to 79F and then 84F on Sunday.  Lows are not expected to get below 50F.  So my plan is to get things in the ground over the next couple of days and see what happens. Yet to go in are things like summer and winter squash, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, beans, carrots, etc.

Already in from seed are parsnips, peas, borage, corn and from transplants peas, tomatoes (five varieties), leeks, bunching onions, regular onions, spinach, swiss chard, kohlrabi and pak choi. As well there is the garlic planted last October.

It looks like the chipmunks and/or squirrels got my Strawberry Corn seeds that I sowed a couple of weeks ago.

To be honest folks I have run out of steam. Hopefully I will get some energy to get everything done that needs to be done.

It’s my turn for the cold nights here in Alberta. Weather is predicted to drop below 50F for the next week at nights with some below 40F. I think I jumped the gun and planted too early for my first year. Yesterday my dark opal basil had beautiful, healthy purple leaves and today the leaves were bleached white. Hopefully the basil will recover, and if not, hopefully it will be the only casualties.

Exciting times. I thought my Strawberry Corn (popcorn) seeds had been eaten by critters. I was wrong. The corn has sprouted and most are now an inch high.   😁

Yesterday I did some cleaning up in the composting area starting by refilling the plastic SoilSaver compost bin. Then I rebuilt the hardware cloth bin. Note the cross country ski polls hammered into two corners of the bin. I no longer make compost in this bin. Rather I use it for storage of unfinished compost and as a place to grow leftover veggie transplants such as tomatoes and squash. It is now home to one tomato plant, a butternut squash and a Canada crookneck squash. I will let the tom grow wild and will try to train the squash to go over to the cedar hedge and use it as a trellis. The other thing I did was clean up a circular bed that is surrounded by plastic lattice. This bed has been used for storing grass clippings for composting, soil, and some unfinished compost. I also use it for growing extra transplants. This year it houses three summer squash ... white scallop, golden zucchini and desi squash.

I thought critters got my corn seeds and then suddenly they sprouted and all was well. Sadly today the corn bed looks like a minefield. About 50% of the corn sprouts are gone. 😞

Oh no TD, all that work for nothing.  I bet it is too late to replant up there unless you have a really short DTM corn.

I'm going to try to fast sprout some corn seeds indoors and get them into the ground asap. Worth a try.

Some positives today:

1. I got a Top Fan badge on the Square Foot Gardening Foundation Facebook page.

2. I managed to recover most of the squares of corn after the critter attack. Turns out I had planted two seeds in most locations and both sprouted. So I moved one of each of the double sprouts to a location that had been critter ravaged. There is only one square now that does not have a corn plant growing in it.

3. I finally finished planting/sowing all of my squares in my SFG. I have some empty squares that I will use for succession planting carrots, bush beans, etc.

4. The temperature in the refilled SoilSaver plastic compost bin has reached 120F (i.e., in the "Active" range on the thermometer).  I ordered a compost aerator tool from Amazon.

We have a resident chipmunk (maybe a family now) so I expect it is to blame. If I try it again I will have to build some kind of protection but not this year.

Well I've given the corn situation some more thought. I may just give it another try but using chicken wire protection (will keep out birds and squirrels but probably not chipmunks) and starting the corn in plastic pots in the mini greenhouse before setting out. May not have enough season left to get a harvest but just to see some corn plants growing would feel like a victory.

Acquired a compost aerator and a used SoilSaver compost bin (paid $20 Canadian). The latter will be a twin for the existing SoilSaver which currently has compost cooking in it at over 130F. It was at 140F a couple of days ago so I will turn it with the new aerator today.
