Do I really need vermiculite?
Hi I'm Joyce I'm from New Zealand way down at the bottom of the planet. I'm just curious as I'm substituting coconut fiber for peat do I really need vermiculite? Opinions please.

Re: Do I really need vermiculite?
Hi, Elzbeth, Mel's Mix calls for equal parts of fluffed peat moss (or coir in your area), vermiculite (China ships a lot so you should be able to buy it) and 5-way blended compost. Vermiculite holds a lot of water which is available to the plants' roots, yet provides for air pockets. I recommend that you go ahead and bite the $ bullet for adding coarse vermiculite. Remember, once the Mel's mix is made, the only thing you will need to add for each new plantings is more blend composts.
