My intention was to show folks an alternative to using a lot of Mels mix in taller beds, this absolutely can relate to SFG, the top can be covered with Mels Mix at a much lower cost, reduce water usage and add to the sustainability of a SFG.
Sqwib & Sanderson, sorry if I took this post off topic. That was not my intention, but I am very interested in better techniques to build new beds at least cost. Next year I will be putting in additional raised beds, and they will all be 18" tall so I am looking at alternatives for filling the first 12" of those beds. A 4' x 16' bed needs 64 cu ft (2.3 cu yd) of dirt/soil/filler in just the first 12" - that could get very expensive very quickly. Especially since I am planning either 3 or 4 new beds that size. Since I make a lot of compost - 6 to 10 cu ft a week - filling the top 6" with Mels Mix isn't a problem, but filling the first 12" is another story.
Thanks all! I'll make sure I stay on topic from now on....

Being Moderator/Administrator means making some decisions that are not always nice. A topic on Hugelkultur was removed, or maybe it was renamed, I don't remember, so I am continuing in the same vein.
On this Forum, the Forum sanctioned by the SFG Foundation, it is okay to suggest using logs plus sand or clean dirt as a bottom filler for tall beds, then topping with Mel's Mix and adding grids.

if there is a way to make a SFG raised higher, or using different materials for the structure, and using something like Hugelculture while planting, then is is not useless banter like you often see in other forums. It's useful information that can be shared and tried by others while doing SF Gardening.
As I remember in Mel's initial book, he experimented quite a lot with various new methods and schemes. the many editions and "new" versions of SFG books, incorporate changes and improvements.
SFG should be an evolving method and you should welcome experimentation and different thoughts/efforts as long as they aren't devoid of positive information related to the subject at hand.
