I just returned from Kenya where I went on a mission trip with my church. The building project just happened to be a greenhouse and when they found out I teach veggie gardening, they asked me to teach a class. What an honor.

The interior dimension of the blocks that they brought me turned out to be 4x4' although I taught in meters. The language hindered the garden because instead of compost and manure, they kept dumping in this red "silky" soil. I finally got two wheelbarrows of well composted goat manure so I just went with what they had.

My contact, an American missionary who has basically lived in Africa his entire life, wasn't able to attend because of a funeral, but I got him connected with Permaculture Resource Institute (PRI) Kenya where they teach composting classes in "nearby" Nairobi.

A wonderful Masai gentleman climbed a tree with a machete to cut the branches for the grids.

We'll see how it goes.

How long were you there, Kim?  Long enough to see things grow? Did you get any resistance to introducing new techniques?

I saw the photos. Now we know how good looking you are. Very Happy

Kim teaching SFG in Kenya Empty bees prevent elephants

Post  AtlantaTerry 8/16/2018, 1:18 pm

Recent studies in areas where elephants live in the wild have shown that they don't like the scent of bees.

So in addition to the greenhouse and garden, the locals may want to install beehives. Not only will the bees help to prevent elephants from raiding the SFG but will also pollinate plants and be a source of honey.

Here is a URL on the subject:

It seems like your students may want to do it their way, right?

Then how about a challenge?

Set up a test SFG your way and one their way with the red silky soil.

Plant the same variety of veggies in each and see which does best.

Maybe both you and they might learn something.

Terry, Kim wasn't there long enough to see the results from the beds. The manure mixed with the soil in the beds, and replenished with each crop will not only help hold precious water but will keep replenishing the nutrients.

I read the African Bee and Elephant article. One of the topics was really interesting. http://elephantsandbees.com/harvesting-and-processing-elephant-friendly-honey/ Unfortunately, they are really aggressive and full body protection is needed for tending the hives.
