Greetings from SW Ohio!

I am new to the forums, and relatively new to SFG (2nd year), but not new to gardening. I was raised on the "truck farm", and have been gardening for the past 60+ years. Several years ago, I migrated from an in-ground garden (30' x 60') to raised garden beds - I currently have 3 beds: 1 3.5' x 14'; 1 3.5 x 10.5', and one 3.5' x 17.5'). I have always done intensive gardening, but last year I began using SFG. With SFG, planning & maintenance is easier than it was before. I produce a lot of compost, so the beds are all very rich in home made compost, and the vegetables respond so well to it that we cannot keep up with the harvests - a lot of it goes to the local food pantry.
I am now in the process of cleaning out 2 sections of one bed and getting ready to plant some fall vegetables.

Thanks, Sanderson! I just returned from a southern California - Mojave - to see my grandbaby. It was hot out there!

Thanks, AtlantaMarie! I used to live in north Atlanta, and graduated from Ga Tech. While there, back in the 70's, I taught classes in Organic Gardening.

NICE! I like GA Tech. Although the area around it is now high-crime... Remember the Varsity? They're about to celebrate 90 years!

Quite an impressive garden you got there.

How could I forget the Varsity? Still trying to digest some of that grease! LOL
We made a nostalgic trip down to Atlanta a few years ago, and were amazed at the changes around Tech, and our old home is now a MARTA station near Chamblee. What a difference 50 years makes! LOL
But, still....

Keeps Georgia on my mind

Thanks, Sqwib! Gardening has been my passion for many years - a hobby that keeps us fed! LOL

Re: Greetings from SW Ohio!
VERY nice garden Ohio. I think I have "Tomato Envy"....
Your tomatoes still look green and healthy while mine have already turned brown here in S/W Illinois. I've taken most of my tomatoes out and now only have three.
I used a heavy layer of straw for mulch and tried to water on a regular basis but once they started to turn brown, they went fast.
I have some fall turnips coming up now and getting ready to start the rest of my fall garden. I have two 4x8 hoop houses that did really well for the past few years. I was pulling fresh carrots last year from the hoop house in January.

Re: Greetings from SW Ohio!
Where in SW Illinois are you, MrBooker? I lived for 7 years on a mini-farm between Baldwin & Sparta - loved it there! It had been a hog farm in years previous to us buying it, and it had the most fertile ground I have ever seen. We grew fruits & vegetables there that were unbelievable! At that time, though, I was commercial beekeeper, and gardening was something I just did in my spare time.

Re: Greetings from SW Ohio!
We live in Millstadt, Il. I'm sure you know where that is. Baldwin in about 30 miles S/E of us.
We bought two lots in town back in 1988 which was also a hog farm at one time.
We in-ground gardened it for some years and it also was awesome. My wife picked five, 5 gallon buckets of green beans from a 30 foot wide row one year and sold them all that same day.
I still have two small in-ground gardens which I framed in and topped them off with Mel's mix to make them raised beds.
If you search this site for: "Mr.Bookers Garden-2018", I have some pics on there. This year I cut back on having so much garden and went a lot of container gardening.

Re: Greetings from SW Ohio!
Yes, I am familiar with Millstadt - I was stationed at Scott AFB at the time I lived there, so I saw a lot of the country.
I checked out your posts in the Garden-2018 - lots of good gardening there. I've been downsizing a little too, since reaching my mid-70's, but I am still addicted to gardening. LOL
