Re: N&C Midwest: June is Here!
Well lots of good stuff here, and some of you are going to be eating some hotties this week!!! I just got back from a long weekend in The Big Easy, and it’s dark, so have to wait until sun-up to see what has happened!
I too love this forum; such a wealth of advice, and the archives!!!
Ants, they farm aphids on my milkweed, but haven’t seen them on the veggies, yet!

OK, weird thing about ants...they were all over my mustard greens. Which were bolting, so up they came. Holes all over. Also done were all lettuces. This has freed up some squares for succession planting. Anybody have suggestions? The only thing I can think of at this juncture is carrots....Can I do onions? I have never grown them...seems late. Maybe just wait until fall planting time?
I amended my 4x4 with blood meal; that bed seems a bit tied up nitrogen wise. Maybe the compost is woody? I have 2 eggplants, and the one in there is 1/4 the size as the on is the South Annex container. (Also not as hot as the south side of my brick house...?)
Very wet out there.

Maybe plant some bush beans in your empty spots? You could also try to start some new lettuce varieties. Onions or carrots would be ok, depending on whether you have something planned for those spots for fall planting.
Or buy a couple of transplants at the nursery; I'm going to try to find a couple of sad clearance cucumbers that need my help lol.

Ya know, I think I am going to leave them empty, because I always fail so badly in the Fall; maybe this way I will actually have a plan AND the space to make it possible! Thanks, BJW!!!BlackjackWidow wrote:Maybe plant some bush beans in your empty spots? You could also try to start some new lettuce varieties. I know but now they are flowering...dang it! I am watching very closely, I have never grown Delicata; last year, my one surviving plant had some melting disease, it was disgusting! I put it in the old tater bed, not sure, the potatoes did fine.CapeCoddess wrote:And for Petey's sake, cover your squash, SR!

Re: N&C Midwest: June is Here!
OK, so hotness has settled into the Midwest. 90+ here for the foreseeable future. As much as I hate to say this, I think the days of my sugar snaps are over. I picked a bunch of overripe ones a couple days ago, and no new blossoms are happening. Anyone ever put a Fall planting of peas in?
I am taking BJW’s advice and leaving my vacated lettuce and greens squares open for Fall planting. This way I have space and a plan for what I want to grow! Radishes for sure, as our spring was short.
Little baby peppers and maters out there. No blossoms yet on the pole beans, cukes have flowers. Squash and melons and eggplants doing great. They like this weather! I will update pictures here in a couple days!
