Re: FROGS?
I can't imagine why not. I'm hoping some find me! Actually I'm raising 100 gray tree frog tadpoles right now. I've always released them in my backyard, but this year I will take them to my sfg, which is down at the community garden. Do you have some already in your gardens?

Re: FROGS?
newbieplanter, YOU WANT FROGS (they eat slugs and other bugs which eat your plants; frogs don't eat plants) but you definitely DO NOT WANT that mint in your sfg. Anyone who has ever grown mint will tell you the same. Soon it will take over you entire sfg. Grow it in a pot. There are several sites advising how to grow mint, and here in sfg topics I have seen some too.
P.S. Very nice sfg garden, and very nice house!

Re: FROGS?
I will second the "get that mint out of there!" comment. Beautiful garden, though... and I am jealous of your toads/frogs!
Re: FROGS?
Looks like you a have a nice fat toad in your garden. I have grey tree frogs in my perennial gardens and they are really cute. They sing at night.

Re: FROGS?
Another vote for containerizing the mint.
I have two kinds of mint growing in containers. Two years ago, I decided to get rid of one variety. I pulled all the green plants up, and left the container in the shed for over 17 months with no light or water. This spring, I set the container outside to empty and re-pot. After a single spring rain, the mint kept growing.
As for the frogs...I actively transport frogs from everywhere in the yard to the garden. I have 6 to 8 frogs in and around the garden at any given time.

Re: Frogs?
We've had a vole problem, and they leave 2" holes at the tops of their runs. A few days ago Dear Husband and I were relaxing in the garden when we saw the earth working at the top of a vole run. My husband was standing right next to the run. I yelled to him with a bloodthirsty scream, "Stab that little beggar with your trowel! Hurry, before he gets away!"
Luckily my husband's cooler head prevailed, and he gently poked around the tunnel first, then unearthed a nice fat toad. I would have been SO sad if I had been the cause of that toad's demise, especially since I transported him to the garden to try to control the flea beetles.
Note to self: Look before you stab.

Re: FROGS?
I would paraphrase ander's last words:"Look before you mow". It happened a few times over the years that I mowed a frog which didn't escape on time.

Blue-tailed lizards
PB, we have little striped, blue-tailed lizards, too. In this area they are the juveniles of broad-headed skinks. The adults are really scary-looking to me, very large and brown. During mating season their heads turn red, and then they REALLY look scary! Five-lined skink juveniles also have blue tails and look very similar to the broad-heads.
And that's probably more than you ever wanted to know, but I wanted to share to save you being surprised by the adults, in case you also have broad-heads. I came upon an amorous couple of adult broad-heads chasing each other on my walnut tree, and the site of those two large lizards with gaping red mouths gave me a real start. They were probably only about 15 inches long, but in my mind they looked to be at least three feet! I came inside immediately to look them up on the 'net, and I couldn't believe they were the adult versions of those cute little striped blue-tails.

Re: FROGS?
We have toads living near the house, and it's amazing the places they find to hibernate over the winter! I frequently disturb one or more in the early spring and am always startled by the discovery (so are they, LOL). Sometimes they've even chosen to live in potted plants on our deck! I love 'em -- they sit by our glass-windowed breakfast/family room door on summer nights and pig out on flying insects that are attracted to the light.
We also have little green anole lizards (one of which flashed his ruby throat at me last Sunday) and a pair of broadhead skinks that sun on drainage rocks located next to our wheelchair ramp. At least, I think they're broadheads -- they move so fast, I haven't gotten more than a quick glimpse!
All these insect-eaters are welcome in my yard!

Re: FROGS?
Well, I did some research in hopes that my cute little blue tailed skinks stay just that. According to what I found out they will not get bigger than about 8 inches. Whew, I thought they were going to get big and scary!! Now if I see a glass lizard I'm going to think it is a snake!! I know snakes are important, but i REALLY HATE coming up on them!! If I see them first from a distance I like that much better. If a snake ever bit me. I wouldn't have to be poisonous. I'd just die from a heart attack just from fright!!

Re: FROGS?
We have Five-Lined Skinks, too! They REALLY love the Mel's Mix. I think I had 3 of them living in my little 2'x8' SFG last year (and laying eggs)! We also have green anoles and an "Eastern Fence Lizard" - he lives by my compost pile and I see him almost every day. (I recently looked up all three lizards so I knew what to call them, and now the information comes in handy!) One thing I looked up that is really BAD for gardens: the Hammerhead Worm (or "Land Planarian"). They actually EAT earthworms and can wipe out an entire population! Scary! Don't chop them up, though, because they regenerate! I saw one in my backyard and had to look it up because I had never seen anything so weird-looking. Too bad that I didn't catch it first. Now it's on the loose in my backyard! I don't think it can get into the SFG's, though, because there are still plenty of earthworms in there. Phew! It always pays to find out (or to ask other SFG'ers) about unfamiliar wildlife in the garden!

Re: FROGS?
Here is a photo of the grey treefrog that I saw sitting on the window shutter in my perennial garden last week. They are so cute.....they can change colours between silver/grey and green to match their surroundings. They have been singing at night this week. I wish I could post a recording of them for you to listen to!
