Re: N&C Midwest - April 2018 - Snuck up on me!
GG, I planted Nanking Cherries at my previous home and had good success with them. The birds certainly enjoyed them. LOL
I picked up "Ground Cherry" seeds at a recent seed swap. These fall to the ground when ripe (hence, "ground" cherries). I understand that they can be used for pies, jellies, etc. and have small seeds instead of pits. Does anyone have experience with ground cherries?

Using the Search feature, I found several threads on ground cherries. Here is one: https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t17707-ground-cherries
Re: N&C Midwest - April 2018–Snuck up on me!
It is a bush cherry, also called Manchu Cherry, cold-tolerant to Zone 2! I planted them last year and they survived even though they were completely overshadowed by volunteer sunflowers. This year I hope to keep them cleared of volunteers so they can thrive instead of just survive. If all goes well, I may even get fruit this year.Scorpio Rising wrote:OK, fill me in+

I cannot wait to hear! This sounds wonderful. I am trying to do an “eat your yard” thing...hence the plantings...love hearing about your stuff!Goosegirl wrote:It is a bush cherry, also called Manchu Cherry, cold-tolerant to Zone 2! I checked the rest of my 'sticks' yesterday and it looks like they are budding. Now I need to remember which ones are currants and which ones are elderberries!

Nothing has germinated outside. But it has been cold...and apparently we will freeze tomorrow night and maybe next too. So will cover the fledgling strawberries.
Stuff on the pad is up, but some hasn’t so need to figure that out.
Just a super late start to the year...

Just covered the strawberry plants with a sheet, and the lettuces too, just as a precaution. I don’t want to lose the few things I do have!
Will spend some time in the basement tinkering with my seedlings tomorrow. And mow then bale my grass;)

Last night down to 34 degrees. I didn't cover strawberries. Have loads of lettuce that reseeded. Didn't cover that either! Maybe I'm horrible but the fittest survived and I'm ok with that. I don't see where anything was lost. Got to love the strength of Mel's Mix.

6:19 am and it is 65F. Our lows have been 20's to 40's, but all night we have had blasting 45 mph warm winds coming out of the south and today is going to be in the 80's! Considering I still have a few spots in my boxes that have ice in them (or they did yesterday!) this is just bizarre!

No, it is just ridiculously wet...back yard only...it is a conundrum.sanderson wrote:?? Literally, or is it that tall??Scorpio Rising wrote:Will spend some time in the basement tinkering with my seedlings tomorrow. And mow then bale my grass;)

I do think that finally our weather pattern (ARCTIC) has broken! I had to cover my new strawberry planted box for 3 nights...now we have a break!Goosegirl wrote:6:19 am and it is 65F. Not one thing that I direct seeded has sprouted. Zero. Radishes would be harvested by now. Not even up.
Some thing (squirrels) have been digging up some seeds too...will have to wait to see what the grid looks like! If it does?

Re: N&C Midwest - April 2018 - Snuck up on me!
I think warm weather is here to stay. It appears that I didn't do well in the "hardening off" process as my tomatoes and peppers both suffered a bit of sun scald. They're producing new growth and it looks like they will all survive. I keep telling myself "Patience, patience, Karen." I just don't listen too well.
The cool weather vegetables are doing well. We had store bought salad yesterday to which I added radishes and baby spinach from the garden. I'm seeing a bit of leaf damage. I will try some Slug Bait to see if that helps.
We extended the fencing around the garden to accommodate four large planters for squash, zucchini, ground cherries, and a fig tree as well as a compost tumbler. This weekend I plan to install drip irrigation. If I keep this up, my "little garden" may some day take over my back yard!
