Trellis mod

This isn't really a "Do-It -Yourself" topic but figured it would be OK here.

This trellis should work nicely in Square Foot Gardens.

I ordered this "Bronze" Obelisk Trellis from Wayfair for my Maypops to place out front.

It says it's stainless steel at Wayfair but it is actually powder coated steel "with Stainless Steel Hardware", it is fairly heavy duty but the color of the powder coating is far from bronze.
After a few mods it is ready for the garden.

• I layered three different greens on the trellis and then hit a few spots with a tan spray paint.
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
• Then it was assembled.
  
  
  
  
  
  
• I extended the legs using 30" pieces of some copper pipe I had laying around. I had to cut off the ends to fit the pipe over the legs.
  
  
  
  
  
  
• This extends the legs about an additional 18" half of that will be in the ground.
  
  
  
  
  
  For installation, 4 pieces of rebar will be placed in the ground and the copper legs will slide over top of the rebar and into the ground 8-10". This will give me a bit more height, make the trellis more sturdy, make the trellis easily removable and prevent the bottom of the trellis from rusting out. Every few years I can hit it with some spray paint if needed.

This is amazing I'm so jealous. I would love them for my roses. I have a plan in the pipeline for them but don't know how I will go

Hello Roseanne from Perth Australia.
Maypop is a Passiflora incarnata.
It's a passion flower.
I'm trying to add multi beneficial plants this year.
Perennials for zone 7 that flower, bring in insects and produce edible fruit.
Other things lined up for 2018, hopefully, Hardy Kiwi, Comfrey, Artichokes, Sunchokes, to name a few.

My experience with sunchokes is that they will spread!  If you want to keep them in one spot, you need to contain them so that the roots stay where you want them.

SQUIB mentioned Comfrey.  That is another plant that can take over and has very deep roots.

Near me is a plot of land that borders houses and is the property of our city where they dump snow.  One year I noticed a lovely line of seventeen handsome plants growing there where there had also been dumped a number of telephone poles. The poles were cleared away and the plant remained.  One day on this forum, I was able to identify them as Comfrey and that they were good for adding to compost bins etc.  For the last five  years I have harvested them twice each year  before they flowered, then let them produce their flowers.

I am a bit concerned with the sunchokes, they are planted in front of the fence to the right of the sun.
I am concerned they will grow up behind the fence which really don't matter because nothing but those weeds with the purple staining berries grow behind the fence, what I am concerned about is them filling in behind, then coming out under the fence again. Then there will be no way to control them. I have seen this with the tiger lilies.
My only saving grace is there is almost no sun exposure behind the fence.


The Comfrey is contained and I am not worried about them. one is tucked in the upper left corner by the top step and the other is in front of the trellis at the bottom of the step where there is a missing rock. This is more or less for the turtles. A few maypops will be planted here as well, you can barely make out the black trellis for the maypops.








The Maypops have me concerned being planted out front but I'm not to worried about them in the back. My brother warned me about the Maypops after I had purchased the trellis, I'll give them a shot and if they become a nuisance I'll eradicate them, hopefully.
