Started my compost yesterday! Empty Started my compost yesterday!

Post  Judge Kemp Sun May 16, 2010 10:16 pm

I bought my compost bin (65 gallon plasic four-sided with four little doors at the bottom) a couple of weeks ago and just had the chance to build it and put it up yesterday.

So far, I have quite a bit of grass I cut and spread out about two weeks ago, as well as some garden greens (cabbage bolted and I had to tear it out). Looking forward to building it up with some table scraps (lots of melon rinds!) and getting it really cooking here in the next week.

This is the final stage of my SFG building this year. Very excited about composting, which sounds so strange to so many . . . Started my compost yesterday! Icon_biggrin

I am jealous. Looking for a similar bin on craigs list or somewhere - so far no lick. By August I can probably afford the $50 ones in HD, but until then I will still look for cheap.

Oh - I think composting is exciting, too!

Chopper - I used an old garbage can we had. It seems to be working just fine. I drilled a bunch of holes all over (I think 3/8" bit?) and Viola! All done.
I roll it around every once in a while to mix the ingredients........just waiting to get good compost now.

I do an open pile next to my shed in the backyard, I used two sections of privacy fence, off the front and back of my shed, then put a gate on the front, then put beds in front of the fence and planted confederate jasmine to cover the fence and hide it. I thought about buying one like you have but decided that it just won't produce enough to meet my needs. I freaking love composting. About once a week, I go by starbucks and get a big bag of used coffee grounds to add to my kitchen waste for the week, then add to the pile, and offset bags of dry leaves. Fun stuff, you'll enjoy it, man that fress compost smells so good, MMM.

Mine is no great shakes (just plastic with small "slide doors" in the bottom and a cover), but it was on sale at Menards a few weeks ago for $25. I don't have the space for a big pile or do-it-myself fenced in area, so it is perfect for me.

Thanks. I am actually using a can that I melted holes into b/c I could not seem to get a grip with the drill. LOL. It is too small tho. I am looking to graduate, but in the meantime I will collect materials and use the too-small can and I am sure one day I will get my heart's desire. :> (and yes, it is a little sad that my heart's desire is a compost bin)
