Has anyone done this using the square foot method?

I am truely a novice.. I've never grown corn before, but I did put up a 4x8 bed just for this project. I planted my corn today, 4 per square... I let the 4 outer corner squares completely empty for my winter squash.. the other non corner outer squares I did not plant any corn on the outer half so that my winter squash vines have somewhere to lay besides growing out into my yard. I am going to plant both butternut and buttercup squash in the outer corners. For my "pole" bean I selected lima beans because.. well, 1) I couldn't find any climbing beans for drying, and 2) I simply do not have enough beds to grow all the vertical plants I'd like... and I love limas!

From another web site, they stated to wait until the corn was 4 inches high before planting the beans and squash. So, I am going to wait.

Somebody tell me this is going to work.....

I am new to SFG too and trying it myself. My beans are coming up a little ahead of my corn (except for 1 stalk) and I'm a bit nervous about that.

I've got them in a 4 x 8 bed along with some other things. 4 x 4 reserved for the Three Sisters. I have corn in the center four squares. I started out planting four per square but turns out they are heirloom so will need to be thinned to one per square... that is, if even that many come up!!

For the outer four corners, I am using 2 kinds of beans and 2 kinds of squash. The other squares are planted with various things -- summer savory, cilantro, radishes -- that are intended as companion plants and I don't mind if they get run over. I have some bunching onion seeds I am going to scatter over everything, a little later.

For my beans I am using Christmas pole limas and Cherokee Trail of Tears pole beans. They are both breaking ground just this weekend. For the squash I am using crookneck yellow summer squash and Rampicante, which supposedly you can use as both summer and winter squash.

I'm pretty excited about it. Let me know how yours goes! Very Happy

It will be exciting to see what happens... I am just hoping it works after the labor and money put into that 4x8 plot....

I know what you mean. I have a 4x8 and a 3x9 put in. I don't know that I'll get my investment back immediately, but even in terms of the fun I've had already.... very well worth it!
