Yes, classy looking, but, I'm afraid they would fall over in friable Mel's Mix.

I want to use the slate, but I would like a longer stake about 3 to 3 1/2 feet long. I'm still looking for it. If anyone has any ideas where I can find it, please post.

Hass , have you thought about buying some 3 foot long 3/16 to 1/4 stainless steel gas welding rods or brass/bronze brazing rods off eBay ?
Yes I know they will be expensive but they will look great if you make up a simple " PIN " jig to fit in a strong bench vice  to bend the rods round as each one will be the same radius & use the same amount of rod to make the hooked end .

Another way might be to buy five or six 15 yard rolls of 1 mm single strand annealed stainless steel wire .

Un roll them ,  stick one end of each coil in a vice or wrapped round a strong nail in the fence then use a battery drill on the free ends , cut to same length & twist them up in four or six strands .
Then when they are nice & tightly twisted up ,  cut them to length require & shape the hook end to hang the slates off .

The cheaper alternative is to buy 30 yards or so of galcanised chain link fence straining wire & use three or four strands to make you long rods as above .

Pulling a fair tension on the wires as you drill twist them will tend to straighten them out by the time the whole length of the coil is twisted up .
