Anyone Shake their Tomato Plants?
Do any of you lightly shake your Tomato or other veggie plants to increase pollination?
Or plant herbs that attract bees for that purpose ?

You just grab the base and shake a little? Do you cover your hands? Just wondering if the oils from our skin would damage . Also, is there a particular stage in the growth of the plant that you do it, or just whenever there are blossoms?? Thanks for responding !countrynaturals wrote:Yup on the shaking. Nope on the herbs.

Yes I tap.
I used to use a rabbits tail on a bit of cane but found that with toms a gentle drumming on the stem near the flower just before lunch time when the plant was producing most pollen ( before too much heat got to it ) gave the best results & was the quickest way for me .

Same here -- without the rabbit's foot. When I raised them inside in the winter, I use an electric toothbrush.plantoid wrote:Yes I tap.

I've never found it to be necessary to shake the plants. We have plenty of pollinators in our yard. A well, I probably shake the plants inadvertently each time I take off the suckers and/or tie the main stem to the stake or trellis as they grow.

What kind of pollinators? Were they already there or did you coax them in?trolleydriver wrote:I've never found it to be necessary to shake the plants. We have plenty of pollinators in our yard. I do most everything. Early in the season is when I help by using an electric toothbrush to buzz the flowers. I did not get as much of a pollen plume when i just tap the flowers. Now there are enough varieties of bees and hover flies working anything blooming that I leave it to them. I plant marigolds and alyssum for the pollinators each year.

We have a lot of bees in the garden. The veggie garden shares the backyard with my wife's flower gardens so that probably attracts the pollinators.brianj555 wrote:What kind of pollinators? Re: Anyone Shake their Tomato Plants?
I used to tap the stems in the spring trying to get the earliest tomatoes. Now I use an electric toothbrush in the spring. When the tomatoes start coming in a lot, then I stop using the tapping or electric toothbrush and just let nature do its thing.

I'm a tomato flicker if the pollinators aren't around. You know, like when you put your middle finger behind your thumb and *boink* the stem a few times?
I don't flick anything else.

Re: Anyone Shake their Tomato Plants?
Hahahahah. Well my tomatoes are on 6' bamboo stakes. So what I decided to do based on what you guys suggested, is shake the bamboo a little bit for starters. The plants aren't secured tightly to the steak, but flicking the steak does rattle the plant a little bit. Being a newbie, I'm being very cautious, making sure I don't break it when I shake it.CapeCoddess wrote:I'm a tomato flicker if the pollinators aren't around.
