Hi! I am an experienced gardener, retired from the retail nursery industry. I live on the family farm (223 acres) on the western slopes of the Cascades at about 1000' elevation. This means I catch a little more rain than Salem or Portland but have a pretty similar climate. My current garden is (somewhat by default) similar to square foot gardening, as I understand it.

We have heavy deer pressure here (and also goats) so my garden is on the second story deck which is concrete and steel, the whole length of the house with a living room sized triangle at one end. I garden in empty protein tubs (think UV stabilized black plastic wine barrels). I figure they hold close to 25 gallons and I have about 75 of them on the deck.

I grow mostly ornamentals but do have tomatoes, chili peppers, cucumbers and tomatillos. And since this is Oregon I "grow my four". Question for the admins: This is still federally illegal so is it restricted to discuss? I have recently started growing hardy outdoor carnivorous plants, which are easy once you set up their infrastructure. I particularly enjoy hummingbirds and other pollenizers so I grow lots of their favorites.

I look forward to figuring out the "bells and whistles" of this site!

Hi Abiqua, happy hi It is preferable that the four not be discussed on this Forum. Family friendly, no politics, just as the Terms of Service outlines. That said, growing a garden on the second story is quite a feat! Any photos of your veggies and flowers?

I am something of a Luddite, so I gotta figure out the digital camera thing. I don't use a cell phone but my daughter's old digital camera is up for grabs. I still need to figure out site features like how to add an avatar pic and other stuff.

Yup, I'm roaming about the site, randomly pushing buttons. The site looks very nicely laid out with lots of interesting functions. I haven't been involved in a forum for several years and it looks like progress has been made. My previous experience required little bits of "code" to be put in for italics etc.

Welcome, Ike. Looks like you figured out the avatar function. Cool Posting pics is a little more complicated -- 2 step process -- but once you figure it out it's a great feature.

Welcome from Ohio, Abiqua!  Love your story, can't wait to see some pics!  What are you growing?  Have you read All New Square Foot Gardening?  It is truly a good read, even for seasoned folks, usually available at your library.

Hello from Silverton, OR 3170584802 Anyway looking forward to your posts.  You also have a Regional thread where folks with similar challenges weather and pest wise happen...

glad you\'re here

Thanks, Scorpio!

I hope to get my battery charged and figure out the camera today.

I grow mostly ornamentals, lots of flowers that the hummers and pollenizers love. In food plants I'm growing seven tomatoes; two 'Juliet', (my favorite salad tomato), two 'Sungold', two 'Morton Hybrid' (one of the New Jersey types from the '50s), and one 'Black Krim' (an heirloom from Crimea). In chili peppers I'm growing 'Early Jalapeno' and 'Lemon Drop' (a Peruvian type with very strong lemon flavor 30,000 Scovilles, hot but not insane). I'm growing some unnamed tomatillos for the first time. (These guys get huge!) I have a couple tubs of cucumbers 'Straight Eight' and 'Marketmore' (no specified number). I grow some herbs too, basil and cilantro as annuals; rosemary, sage, tarragon, oregano and lemon thyme as perennials. No trees up on the deck but I do have a couple of Goumis, Elaeagnus multiflora, an early fruiting bush in the Autumn Olive family.
