Claytonia (Miner's Lettuce)
I'm still searching for a green our family will eat that I can grow. Has anybody ever tried Claytonia? What does it taste like?
Re: Claytonia (Miner's Lettuce)
I grow this, though I'm still working out how and when to use it. Flavor-wise, it's between watery spinach and lettuce, but a little sour. But also somewhere between crisp and slimy in texture. It doesn't taste bitter to me - BUT I'm not very sensitive to bitter flavors, so you'd have to ask someone else about that aspect.
I plant it 16/square, but it's a cool/cold weather green so I wouldn't recommend trying to plant it now. The leaves are very small compared to a typical greens vegetable and it wilts comparatively quickly after harvest, which makes it awkward (to me anyhow) for harvesting and cleaning. Mine reseeds readily and heavily.

Thanks, Beetles. I think I'll pass on this one -- doesn't sound very appetizing.BeetlesPerSqFt wrote:I grow this, though I'm still working out how and when to use it. Suz, do you need extreme heat tolerance?

Re: Claytonia (Miner's Lettuce)
Absolutely! I'm researching the most heat-tolerant varieties of everything I want to grow. I'm so tired of watering 800' of crops that just sit there and produce nothing for the whole summer. My mission is to have a productive garden all year long. I know I can do it in the winter, spring, and fall, but summer is thwarting me at every turn. I was hoping the wood chips would make the difference, and they do help -- nothing is dying -- but this is just year 1 for that process. I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn.Scorpio Rising wrote:Suz, do you need extreme heat tolerance?
