I'm still searching for a green our family will eat that I can grow. Has anybody ever tried Claytonia? What does it taste like?

I grow this, though I'm still working out how and when to use it. Flavor-wise, it's between watery spinach and lettuce, but a little sour. But also somewhere between crisp and slimy in texture. It doesn't taste bitter to me - BUT I'm not very sensitive to bitter flavors, so you'd have to ask someone else about that aspect.

I plant it 16/square, but it's a cool/cold weather green so I wouldn't recommend trying to plant it now. The leaves are very small compared to a typical greens vegetable and it wilts comparatively quickly after harvest, which makes it awkward (to me anyhow) for harvesting and cleaning. Mine reseeds readily and heavily.

Thanks, Beetles. I think I'll pass on this one -- doesn't sound very appetizing. Shocked

Absolutely! I'm researching the most heat-tolerant varieties of everything I want to grow. I'm so tired of watering 800' of crops that just sit there and produce nothing for the whole summer. Evil or Very Mad My mission is to have a productive garden all year long. I know I can do it in the winter, spring, and fall, but summer is thwarting me at every turn. I was hoping the wood chips would make the difference, and they do help -- nothing is dying -- but this is just year 1 for that process. I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn. geek
