Name That Plant!! Empty Name That Plant!!

Post  Selandra 5/15/2010, 10:27 pm

Okay so I've noticed a lot of "what plant is this" going around so I am hoping for some early help. I started some of my squash, watermelon and a cucumber inside when I was going through my cabin fever stage. Unfortunatly, in that stage I am also delirious and unorganized, okay, just unorganized. So I didn't bother marking the plants. Well now I have some big plants in my garden and no clue which is which. I'm hoping for a little help as I may need to transplant one that should be in nine squares. The rest I was planning to trellis. Luckily I do have the seed packets still so I can give you six choices for my five plants, yep, I just realized one didn't make it. If I can find out which one that is I can replant. THANKS ALL!!

Your choices are: A. Fortna White Pumpkin, B. Cucumber Lemon, C. Watermelon Orangeglo, D. Golden Acorn, E. Yellow Scallop

Name That Plant!! Empty Just a guess

Post  jenjehle 5/15/2010, 10:55 pm

Ok, I'm going to take two guesses Smile

It's either a cucumber or an acorn squash. But I'm just a 2 year gardener.... still learning myself. Either way, it's going to need lots of room to grow.

Now, I'll check back later to see what some experts have to say!

Name That Plant!! 100_2910I'm guessing that 1 is an acorn squash. I have one almost identical, but I don't know what it is either. I bought a variety packet of winter squashes and acorn was one of them. The others in the packet were Lakota, butternut, and spaghetti squash.

I think 2 might be a melon.
4 looks like a pumpkin to me.
5 looks like a bush type plant, so maybe scallop?
I guess that leaves 3 to be the cucumber?

Good luck!

LOL. I think it might all mostly be a surprise!

I will guess at #2 because I'm growing lemon cucumbers and the leaves are shaped the same as your pic.

I think numbers 1 and 5 look the least like they're gonna vine... so which bush-types did you plant? Good luck on finding out!
I once planted spaghettisquashes inbetween my butternuts, and the squashes that came on it looked like neither one of them...so sometimes waiting for the fruit won't help!

Here's a pic of my lemon cucumber . . . maybe this will help you match it up with one of the pics. I still thinks its #2 but its still hard to say for CERTAIN . . .

Name That Plant!! VeggieGarden001

I agree that 1 & 5 look like bush varieties.

As the plants grow more you'll probably be able to narrow it down with that criteria in mind Name That Plant!! Icon_biggrin

Good thing I like Christmas and surprises!!

I'll move #5 with #1 and they can have the box to themselves, not totally SFG but I think they'll survive. Name That Plant!! Icon_redface So I can rule out the acorn and scallop as they are my only two bush type.

What I need to really find out is if one is my watermelon. I realized I forgot to put that one might be a cantalope melon. So are there 2 melons or one melon, one pumpkin. And if only one melon how can I tell if it is the watermelon or not Name That Plant!! Confused I have to have my orange watermelon... aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....

Okay, I'm better now. I guess this will teach me next year to label as I go.

So do I just plant another watermelon and risk having more than I can possibly eat since I'm the only one who really likes melon in the family? Or wait until little ones start popping up and risk planting then and hope the growing season is long enough? I need to go cry now Name That Plant!! Icon_sad .

Selandra.... if you have the space, I'd definitely plant another watermelon, since that's one thing that you really want. If you end up with more than one, you can always find a friend or neighbor who would be willing to take your extra fruit.

Huh, funny... I was betting on #2 as the watermelon, on the grounds that mine hasn't sprouted yet. Very Happy (And I am a total newbie so that's just a wild guess!)

That is pretty funny. I have been saved by the fact that I have everything I plant in a grid on my computer. And for some reason I have kept up with it. So when I forget, I just look there. I am better with that than with garden markers and my original set of 'permanent marker' markers all washed off - so good thing I had the grid - super simple - made it in excel: example:

Green = 4-20; yellow = 4-21; Blue = 5-2

Hi Chopper,

I used Excel to make spreadsheets of my beds too! I printed the map and I'm using it to make notes about the seeds with dates planted, etc. Its almost like a journal with a map you could say. I'd be in the same shape as Sela otherwise! A box of chocolates as they say!!! It will throw in a new twist of excitement!

Oh, and about the indeterminate tomatoes . . . I'm doing one per square as well. I'm needing to prune pretty much every other day at this point and the suckers are still almost too fast for me. Its starting to get hard to stop the madness! I think next year I might stagger them to give around 18" of space instead. How are yours working out so far?

Hey Chopper,

I do all of my "charting" in an excel document also! My husband set it up and convinced me I'd like doing it that way. He was right Smile

None of your plants looked like watermelon to me. Watermelons have very distrinctive, deeply lobed leaves - they almost look like fingers.

Number two looked like a cucumber to me.

Well, I think I was wrong. My plant I thought looked like yours ended up a butterbush- not an acorn. Smile

I have a cantaloupe. The leaves look kind of like #3.

Any fruit developing yet? Let us know how it's going.
