Baby Food Empty Baby Food

Post  yolos 6/23/2017, 9:33 am

I have started making baby food for my soon to be second grandson.  I have heard that you can dehydrate, powder and then re-hydrate some veggies to make baby food.  I do not have a coffee/herb grinder that the grinding part can be immersed in water so I was afraid it would not be sterile enough.  Also dehydrating takes a while so I decided to steam, puree and then freeze the baby food instead.

I made summer squash baby food a few days ago.  I cut up the summer squash but did not remove the skin and then steamed it until translucent.  Then pureed it, and then spooned it into ice cube trays and froze it.  Then I popped out the cubes and sealed the cubes (3 cubes per bag) in my Food Saver.

And then last night I repeated the process with zucchini.

Great idea! Will you be trying other veggies like green beans, winter squash and sweet potatoes?

Yes.  I have some sweet potatoes left over from last years harvest.  My plan is to do sweet potatoes tonight.  With our last grandson, my daughter made a lot of her baby food but the veggies were purchased from the grocery store.  This time I have a garden and we will do what we can to make HIS food better.

I am not growing winter squash this year but with the last grandson, my daughter did make winter squash baby food.

I will probably try green beans.  I planted some bush beans to try this.  I will pick them young and tender with no strings.

I plan on growing some English Shell Peas this fall and hope to have enough to make some food.

Baby Food - Sweet Potatoes - I forgot to put Saran Wrap over the trays while I was freezing them.  I brushed off the frost just before I sealed them in Food Saver bags.

We made baby food for our first from veggies purchased at the store. Now making it for our second with veggies from the garden which is awesome Smile

One word of caution- peas did not work out for us. I guess we needed a vitamix or blendtec or something because our ninja blender would not blend them fine enough to pulverize/liquify the skins. So I had to try to mash it all through a strainer which was extremely time consuming and not at all worth it.

thanks for the warning.  I have a Ninja blender also.  But my daughter has a vitamix so if she wants peas, I can borrow her blender if mine does not work.

Thanks for the warning on peas.

When I had my first, I received a little hand baby food grinder. It didn't really work for pureed food, more like Stage 2 or 3 texture. Hey, I was a real pioneer. Wink

Just finished making some baby food from Rattlesnake Green Beans.  I picked young tender beans, then steamed them until tender, then pureed and then froze in ice cube trays.  I will put them in food saver bags after they freeze.  I have already done summer squash, zucchini, sweet potatoes and now beans.  That still leaves peas (fall), carrots (fall) and winter squash.  I just had a large container become available in my garden so I will plant some butternut squash and hopefully it will have time to mature before first frost at end of October.  Any one else have any suggestions for more baby food that can be grown in my garden.  I have been considering potatoes (which I have) but am not sure about those.  Any one have experience with them.

Maybe check out the baby food isle for ideas? It's been way too many years for me. Wink
