Hello from Pennsylvania
Hello! I'm north of Pittsburgh, PA and will be attempting my first Square Foot Garden. I think what will be a more difficult task than being a first timer is trying to convince my husband that there's a difference between "raised bed" gardening and square foot gardening! Looking forward to a much more pleasant gardening experience "above" our clay soil than in our clay soil!

Welcome to the Forum from California! If you have read All New Square Foot Gardening, then you are excited to get started. We will be your cheering section, as you slowly win over hubby
Re: Hello from Pennsylvania
Welcome from your neighbor to the east (in central PA, close to State College)! I've got that clay soil, too, and there's a lot to be said for growing above it in Mel's Mix! What plants are you most looking forward to growing?

Re: Hello from Pennsylvania
Hello from your neighbor to the left, near Columbus, Ohio. I have the same hard clay soil as you. It's a dream to run your hands through Mel's Mix. Any weeding from seeds blown in, is no more than a simple pinch of two fingers and simply flick it out.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

Re: Hello from Pennsylvania
Thank you, all! Most interested in planting lettuces, herbs, tomatoes, zucchini, and beans.
Yes, I read the All New Square Foot Gardening book a few years ago. Now I'm skimming through to get particulars on the MM, while hubby makes the box(es)! Hopefully, I can get all the ingredients from local gardening centers!
Thanks again!

Hi DinoLovesMe. Welcome from another clayey area; Atlanta, GA!
I couldn't agree with you more....

Re: Hello from Pennsylvania
Herbs are an excellent choice for your first garden! My perennial herbs are in my landscape beds because I started them before I had my ANSFG beds, but I grow basil, parsley, cilantro, and dill in my beds. I keep my mint in containers because it's an invasive grower.DinoLovesMe wrote:Thank you, all! Most interested in planting lettuces, herbs, tomatoes, zucchini, and beans.

What's your plan for spacing the zucchini? (Ultimately it takes up about a 3'x3' block - though some people plant it on a corner and let it go over the edge so it's closer to 2'x2'.)

Hi DLM and
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
