Hello from Sydney, Australia
Hello everyone,
I am an absolute beginner, but am very keen to try out square metre gardening in my apartment. I have a large balcony with an outdoor planter box. I intend setting up a 1 metre square box (3 ft by 3 ft). I would like it to be at 60cm height ....so need to figure out a way of raising it up and the kind of bottom I need to have to the frame.
Would be great to get help/responses particularly from others who are trying it out on the balcony of an apartment.
I have read the square foot gardening book and it has given me the confidence to make a start.
Krishna

Welcome Kirshna from Ottawa, Canada. Great to have you join us on the forum where you will find welcoming, pleasant and very helpful people. We all wish you much success with your SFG efforts.
Some of us build Table Top raised beds. Mine has a plywood bottom. I've posted a photo below and there are more on the following thread:

Re: Hello from Sydney, Australia
Hi Krishnak53. Welcome also from Atlanta, GA (SE USA).
I think you'll find there are several folks who garden on their patios or even their roofs. I'm sure some of them will pop in soon...
Glad you're here! And I'm looking forward to seeing your patio. :-)

Welcome, Krishnak53! So glad you found us! Lots of us do container gardening, lots of information here, some folks call them Table Tops. Have you read any of Mel's SFG books?

Re: Hello from Sydney, Australia
Krishna, Welcome to the Forum from California, U.S.! At this time, you should be able to have a "winter" garden of lettuces, cole crops, snow peas, etc. If you are not on the bottom floor, you may have to have a drip pan underneath the bed so the brown water doesn't drip onto your downstairs neighbor. Just make sure there is an air gap between the bottom of the bed and the drip pan so the plants don't get water-logged roots. You can set the bed on 5 bricks for elevation. So many creative ways to do it. Here is one one link from a patio gardener.
Please let us know what you find to make the Mel's Mix.
