Has anyone tried 13 per square?
As I know some people have successfully done 5 per square for plant spacing with some crops, I was wondering if anyone had tried planting 13 per square? My thought was basically if you drew a "tic-tac-toe" kind of grid in the square, you could plant in the center of each small square created and at the intersections.
I was thinking about trying this for beets, as I can't decide if I want to do 9 or 16 per square. Figured this might be a good compromise. Is this just a stupid idea and I'd be better off just planting 16 in normal 4×4 square pattern within the square foot?

I haven't but I play around with spacing a lot since my old window boxes are 1.5'x either 5.5', 6.5' or 7' long....I do the math! I get about 20 plants in one of those "squares" on a 16 spacing plants....go for it! Do one square of 9 or 16 and one of 13 and compare!

Yes, I have done 13/sq etc. I normally plant with staggered spacings within the square. This is an old intesive gardening trick.
Some beets are larger plants than others. It has been a few years but I think the Detroit reds were big, while the Goldens were small. NIce think about beets though is that they are tasty at any size so you can start with a tighter spacing and then thin to adapt as needed.
