New to SFG from NW Iowa Empty New to SFG from NW Iowa

Post  dmladdusaw Sun 9 Apr 2017 - 19:11

Hello everyone, greetings from NW Iowa.  I am going to be new to SFG this year.  I am planning on 2 boxes, one for shorter veggies and a pyramid for tomatoes, beans and carrots.  I am so excited to be planting a garden again.  I have not had one in 10+ years due to space, but I went to our garden show here a couple weeks ago and am so excited.  I have purchased the book and read it cover to cover.  I am planning on making the boxes next weekend and getting some lettuce, spinach and radishes.  I am having some trouble finding compost.  We have a sanitary dump here in town, only branches, leaves, grass etc. and could have some access to the compost, but I am worried that the clippings could have chemicals on them.  Is it something I should be worried about?  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you!

DM, Welcome to the Forum from California! glad you\'re here You are right to be concerned. Municipal green waste compost can be a hit or miss proposition. Some folks have had success. Others felt there were still herbicides in it affecting their gardens.

Here is a recent link for store bought composts. Don't forget to check Craig's List for composted barn manures, and worm castings which go a long way. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t21089-recommended-store-bought-compost#263516
