Me, too! He was the grandpappy of all bumblebees. When I see those big huge fat ones I wonder how those tiny wings ever get them off the ground. He wanted to come in the house with me as I was heading in the back door. I talked to him, telling him that that was not a good idea and, after a bit of debate, he finally left.

Same here, but he/she was in a hurry to make an appointment elsewhere...  still, a happy sight.  Also, a couple of butterflies touched down in the newly-purchased flowers I had sitting outside yesterday.  They were back for additional visits throughout the day.  Almost got all my butterfly/bee plants potted on the patio... butterfly weed and milkweed "silk mix" that I found locally, yarrow, shasta daisies, marigolds, and others.
Nice!  I haven't been flower shopping just yet....gotta spend some clean-up time first!  My violas are blooming out front, and bulbs about done, one or two tulips hanging on...

Dandelions are pretty!  LOL!  They really are...

I've gained a new appreciation for dandelions, and have been letting them grow in my yard, now... I'm sure the neighbors think I'm quite the yardwork slacker. Oh well...

Much to the disapproval of my neighbors I let my dandelions grow because I eat them. Best to eat the leaves, before they flower, as the older they get the more bitter they get.  Great in salads or sauteed up as you do regular leafy greens.   The roots are used to make a diuretic tea.

I don't eat them, but the ones that are in the lawn I just plan on leaving them for the bees and butterflies. Last year a I saw a few monarchs going from dandelion to dandelion.

High five for ignoring your neighbors. I've been in a rural area the past 10+ years, more relaxed attitude.   My dandelions get cut when the lawn is mowed. No chemicals here.  Honey bees sure like the flowers and nearby are garden beds they can pollinate.  It all works together right? When I go back to my old neighborhood where everyone had perfect solid dark green lawns I can't help but wonder about all those weed killing chemicals...
Dandelions are very nutritious, at least a dozen vitamins and nutrients -  http://foodfacts.mercola.com/dandelion-greens.html

I happen to enjoy dandelion wine. My baby chicks love tearing apart dandelion flowers and petals. Nah, dandelions don't bother me at all. Nice neighbors understand and the others can be ignored.

I (no, my ex) used to want the yard sprayed 3x/yr for whatever, grubs, weeds, crabgrass....I live in a really high yard maintenance area..most of them are retired or just really crazy another mowing??????.I am a single person and work 2 jobs...so my spare time does not go into grooming my acre.

I had one treatment last spring, and did not repeat one this year.  There are a few dandelions and violas in the yard.  They are pretty.

I just really have decided I don't care!  I want to enjoy my yard, which I do, and not kill things that dont bother anyone or anything!

I am perplexed about the pictures.....I never used to have issues.  Grrrr.

Cool here today.  Plants indoors.  Will direct seed FINALLY some stuff this weekend.  And start the serious heat lovers; cukes, melons, squashes.

Might actually get a mini salad tomorrow!

Well, I just set my tomatoes, peppers, and herbs outside for a watering and a bit of full spectrum light.  Won't stay long, cold out there today.

Hope I can get some things in the beds tomorrow...maybe yet today, we will see....rather blustery.

Did pick up the lumber and screws for my 3x7!!!!!  Sounds like a Motrin day tomorrow....

Nice!  My garlic all disappeared last year, not a single one made it out of 2 different beds....just POOF.  This year, all are up, and looking good.

I haven't planted my taters yet...need to get my new bed built.  Out of room, but I could put them in my old window boxes, they are 12" deep....I will try to do that this week!  I have sprouting Yukon Gold from last year.

I just got in from doing 8 squares:  Sugar Snap peas on trellis, Sugar Snax and Tendersweet carrots, Chiogga and Ruby Queen beets, Tokyo Cross turnips, and Minowese Daikon & Sparkler radishes.

Will try to get hotties in this week on the pad downstairs; melons, squashes, cukes.

Thinking about using mels mix in a 5 gallon bucket, seen someplace you take two buckets or planters and cut them in forth so there is a web shape bottom then put the bucket or pots together and fill with dirt a layer of potato then another layer of dirt, think 4 per layer then more dirt every 6 inch sorry my not remember it all have to do an internet search may have been one of those instructible Then in 90 days or harvest time you pull the bicket or pot out and harvest by brushing off the dirt :>)

I have about 10-12 more potatoes have to have room for all the tomatoes and peppers etc Very Happy

not the one but you get the idea, the one i seen was two buckes with the 2nd mostly cut out as a sleeve this one has some merit too

I know several people on this site grow their potatoes in grow bags, and depending on the type, you can do several layers of them in the same bag!  If you try it, keep us posted on how it turns out!  Potatoes are pretty easy to grow, I think.  When I did traditional gardening, I would throw them on the ground and cover them in straw.  That's it.  LOL!

I think most everything is up in my 4x4 and now I am thinning things out.
Potatoes look good, onions and sugar snap peas, too. Spinach is thinned and looking good.
Lettuce - getting there; needs a little more thinning, I think but it's still rather tiny.
Carrots - woh! Way too many but they are really tiny. May wait a little more before thinning. It looks like I planted a thousand. Ha!

Maybe we'll direct sow the herbs this next week.

Got most of my perennials planted in my front bed over the past two weeks or so and that was a lot of work (including the Japanese maple). I tried to amend my soil - so much clay! So, I mixed in some compost. Hoping that will help. Couldn't hurt, right?

Got more seeds out.. had direct sowed the lettuce/kale/radishes a few weeks ago, put in the beets, swiss chard, parsley, cilantro and carrots.

Peas are up and loving it.. spinach is struggling.  So far, all are in containers on my patio as I have 2 sq feet maybe more around my patio at the apartment I could get by with.. those will be a cucumber and tomato (brandywine).

Flowers and other herbs will go in a few weeks.

Wow, good start for you, too, NRS!  I direct sowed the same stuff you did, nothing up, as I just did it Sunday....and sugar snaps also not up.  Love my sugars....I did start my chard with the spinaches.  I love chard.   It is a go to green and very productive , disease and pest resistant...slugs love it, but they are pretty controllable.

My spinach is struggling too, for many reasons.  Some is bolted...(why) and some is just not happening, again (why??????). It has not been hot here, don't get it.  The only year I got a decent spinach harvest was my first, late planting, direct sowed year. study

Yay, I can see your photos now, SR!   The kale is looking good, and I can see you're going to be swimming in lettuce in a few weeks.

Not much new here, other than everything I posted a photo of last week is now bigger.  Trying to get my other 3 beds (and several containers) ready for May planting and transplanting.
