The beets are tasty...both roasted and steamed.  Carrots have been going in some simple chicken noodle soup.

I love chickpeas but was always told they don't grow well in my zone...maybe I'll take a risk and plant some next year...always love a few new things on the list to experiment with.

And garlic waiting....will mulch with leaves (have LOTS!).  Hope some makes it, I think it was squirrel fodder last year.

French beans are just green beans/snap beans/string beans. French dwarf beans are "bush" beans, and French climbing beans are "pole" beans. It's just a regional name difference.  Smile

Ok, just saying.  Bakers uses French for some common cultivars;  example I am looking for Marvel of Four Seasons lettuce.....

My last BLT...December 8th.  Actually, this tomatoe has been here since September. But it is way better than anything you can get commercially.

Yum....see you next year, fresh tomatoes.N&C Midwest: December 2016 - Page 2 3170584802

Absolutely! Just because we may have a bit of compost or manure on our hands at times does not mean we are incapable of attending an affaire cravate noire (Black Tie Affair). Very Happy   Thomas Jefferson, himself, was a world traveler and plant collector extraordinaire and brought a great many veg and fruit varieties from various countries (allegedly having even resorted to smuggling by sewing viable seeds into the lining of his coat) in order to grow them in his gardens at Monticello, the name itself of which is Italian.

Speaking of the Merveille des Quatre Saisons, I grew it last year...a lovely butterhead type. I quite prefer it's regional name. I suppose it's because, considering how young the States, I tend to look for heritage veg varieties in catalogues from various countries in Europe and Asia and therefore refer to the variety by the name which I find it. To think there are gardens and allotments still being cultivated in Britain today that are far older than the original 13 colonies, long before there was a "United States". That's not to say the U.S. hasn't created some awesome varieties...the Small Sugar/New England Pie Pumpkin is one of my favourites!

I must admit I have a penchant for botany, so if it's an herb, I will most often include the binomial as well as the common name since the common name can be shared by two or more entirely different species. The sharing of common names can even occur even within the same country. For example, what is called purslane on one side of the country is not the same as purslane on the another. When looking for "purslane", I've found various catalogues listing plants by that name, but not all the catalogues were showing the same plant. Some were offering up Claytonia perfoliata as their purslane, with others offering Portulaca oleracea as theirs. Thankfully both species are edible, unlike the rather toxic "milk purslane" aka spotted or prostrate spurge (Euphorbia maculata syn. Chamaesyce maculata). Just another reason why I love gardening so. It not only gets me on my hands and knees, but also keeps me on my toes. Laughing

Your BLT and toms looks soooo yummy, SR!!! hungry  I have a few unripe toms still hanging onto a potted plant in the greenhouse, but I fear they won't make it through the night. Whilst I've a bit of heat going in the greenhouse, I doubt it's enough to keep it from freezing...it's supposed to get down to -12°C/10°F by morning.

I have to say it was pretty deliciosa!   I too am a botany nerd!  And Beetles (sorry BPSF, hope you aren't' offended) and Citizen Kate too!  Hey CK!  Miss you...

Anyhow, so glad you are online on our forum, GG!  Our other regional host is also a GG, Goose Girl!

I would love a greenhouse.  I do think I am up to the challenge of building a decent cold frame.  I have a south facing red brick wall that should help the situation...planning.....

Ha!  Good!  Cold here today.  Need to venture to the compost heap tomorrow for a deposit....that is about it.  Deep in the catalogs.  Re-reading some books as well....

Overall, not bad.

Settled on a composting routine that's working out well.  Very low cost, low maintenance, and managed even to get the worms involved.  (You may recall I tried worm farming last winter.  I didn't care for it at all.)  Also got one of those leaf blowers, and now I've got an abundant supply of automatically shredded dead leaves to add to it.

Built a new set of grow light shelves that holds 6 florescent tube fixtures.  Made some tweaks on the design through the growing season, and it's working extremely well, so I think it's the last one I'll have to build.  (Unless I start raising more plants for others.)

Grew tomatoes in my square-foot beds for the first time this year.  They did fantastic!  Now, if I can come up with a better trellis system...  :-/  (Just not a fan of the netting, so I'm trying to come up with my own design.)

Finally happy with my irrigation contraptions, so that's one less thing I'll have to work on this spring.
And I've finally got the spider mites on the run, and gaining.   N&C Midwest: December 2016 - Page 2 3759993749

I saw your BLT -  drooling

Nice long tomato season for you, then?  I remember you got off to a bit of a rough start, this spring.

Nice!  Sounds like a good year for ya!  I am interested, are you growing under lights year round?  Or just for starts?

My year was interesting, actually very delicious.  Learned a lot.  Like I plant way too many pole beans.  I don't can, so you gotta eat them.

And I am a really terrible summer cook.  Much better in winter.  Need to plant for that! Many things went bad because I cant' heat up my house for a meal.  Too $$$$$$

It was a cold spring here, and my spinach crop nearly got frozen...but I tried pop bottle cloches, they actually saved the plants, but acted like cookie cutters and uprooted every one...they made it, but....ya know.

Summer was good! Melons were A-mazing!  Like really great!  Doing more.

Now in deep planning for next year....missed ya!

PS, I don't like the trellis string.  I use old metal trellises that I had from forever ago to put my climbers on.  I have 3 wrought iron trellises, and they are great.  But I had them from before for other purposes.  This time of year, your local nursery might want to move them for new inventory...

They still are a pain to get the stuff off, but WAYYYY less than string.  IMHO.

Ice, ice baby here today!  Rained hard last night, then froze!  Pretty!  But made a skating rink out of all the side roads, which I live on one.....fun ride to church (not).

Made fudge, my dad's recipe.  Actually turned out!  It is the old fashioned, cook it and hope you judge the "soft ball" stage correctly!  I did!
