I picked this up from a facebook group..
A container full of water, flush with the soil
Thats it, I did not add anything to attract them, must be the moisture...

an odor of death after a bit.

Wait...what?? You put water in a container, sprinkle in some soil and they jump right in? Do I have that right?

No CC. dig a hole for the container.....fill container with water, place in hole...then carefully fill in edging around side of container. trying not to get soil in water...
or place the container in hole, then fill with water.
They just plop in...some folk have used stuff like soap, etc. I used only water, indicating they want to moisture.
There may have been a squash bug or two in there also.
I am going to use some larger containers now and see what happens.

I wonder if a tuna fish can is deep enough? The photo is yours, the sow bugs you personally collected, correct?

 yes
I used the tuna can as if was in my hand at the time. I have a few larger bowls I'll use when time permits, these critters are around forever. What amazes me is the stench of decay in that small tin...

I love this Jimmy! I'm heading out with cat food cans of water right now. I have pea and Bush Bean seedlings coming up that I need to protect. Where are you dumping that stinky mess? You think they can go in the compost pile?

You mean as far as damage goes? I don't think they do anything beyond the seedling stage. Not that I've noticed anyway.

OH my gosh...I forgot I laid them on my wifes flower bed to take some pictures and plumb forgot, that was 2 days ago..
Probably dried up by now...sort of looked like lentil soup...I sure wouldn't put them in my compost and offend my beneficial microbes.

Hey Jimmy, how long did it take for you to get that many rollie pollies in your trap? Mine were out overnight and I have three or four dead ones in each of two cups. I thought I would have a lot more.

CC, You wrote "cups" instead of cans. Are you using plastic cups? They should also work if they are too slick for the rollie pollies to climb out.

Yes, I ended up using cups because unbeknownst to me my wonderful mother did the recycles yesterday so all the cans are gone. They are like Solo cups and we cut them down to about 3 inches high and I bury those and added water. It works because they have rolly pollies in them, just not as many as Jimmy had. Maybe I don't have the infestation that he has...or had I should say.

was about 3  days 24 hours. I had them deep down in my cold frame where is is dark and cool, maybe that is why so many went for a swim.. I really have lots all over..my compost is full of them and I really don't mind

Post  OhioGardener 6/9/2019, 9:14 pm

While searching for solutions to control sowbugs, found this old post, and it worked! I have a bed with young Sora radishes (the ones that like warm weather), and the sowbugs have been eating not only the young seedlings, but have been eating holes in the red outer skin of the radishes.  Buried a tuna can about half full of water in the bed, and this morning the bottom of the can was completely covered with dead sowbugs. Now looking for some more cans to put one in each bin.  With the very wet spring we have had, we have been overrun with sowbugs. I don't mind sowbugs in the compost, but I suspect they lay their eggs there and then are transported to the gardens with the compost. Once in the garden they are very destructive to young seedlings.

I've heard of beer for slugs, corrugated cardboard and Sluggo PLUS for earwigs and rolly pollies, but not little swimming pools for RP. Very Happy
