BIG Storms just came through
60/70 mph winds just came through and ripped up my zuke and tomato plants out of the ground. WOW...... We are OK though. Also tree down across my roof. BIG STORM.

Re: BIG Storms just came through
You might want to check to see if cold Canadian/Arctic air collided with warm air. That might explain the ferocity of the storm.

MrB ... sorry to hear of your damage. Keep safe.
donna ... If it was cold Canadian Arctic Air, that air must have jumped right over me and the rest of us in southern/eastern Ontario. As of 8:30 this evening we are still at 86 degrees Fahrenheit. But we did get a thunderstorm this afternoon for just a few minutes.

I'm still studying/struggling to understand how such weather events occur.

Me too Donna. I know in my area we are currently under the influence of a hot humid air mass coming up from the Gulf of Mexico. I suppose if there is colder arctic air at higher altitudes on top of that Gulf air then who knows what can happen.

Apparently, the jet stream has made a northern turn over your area, allowing warm air from the south to intrude.
Think of the jet stream as a blockade; cold air above, warm air below.

Tree on the roof? Tomatoes ripped out of the ground? That's a big wind!

Re: BIG Storms just came through
Yes, we're fine. Just got everything cleaned up and back to normal. The good thing is that we got our 155 gallon rain barrels refilled.AtlantaMarie wrote:Oh, MrBooker.... GoodNESS! Glad you're okay...

Oh, that's nice, isn't it? We do the same with our 330-gallon totes. It's AMAZING how much water comes off of a roof!
Re: BIG Storms just came through
Yes. It only takes a few tenths to fill my barrels. Do you put anything in your water totes to keep the water from going bad? I had to empty my water last month because it went bad.AtlantaMarie wrote:Oh, that's nice, isn't it? We do the same with our 330-gallon totes. It's AMAZING how much water comes off of a roof!

Re: BIG Storms just came through
No. What we did was paint them black to prevent algae build-up. Worked like a charm! You'll need 3-4 coats of paint. You really want it covered well.
We emptied one the other day and the water was nice & clear. (Had to move it to make it more usable for the greenhouse.)
(We ARE planning to empty both later this fall and run some bleach thru just to be safe.)

Re: BIG Storms just came through
That is a very good and interesting question. I hope someone has an answer. I have been using rain water gathered in plastic and galvanized trash cans for years. That doesn't make it right, but now I wonder if what I get after it starts to grow green algae is good or not so good. It is funny what gets taken for granted.

Re: BIG Storms just came through
That IS a good question. And I don't know... I DO know that I don't want to clog up my outtake valve, etc. That's why we're doing the bleach.
Re: BIG Storms just came through
I quickly looked up the algae pages in the Microbes book and it does not say they are bad in the water used for gardens. Painting clear or white containers helps prevent their growth.
