I have found that with tomatoes, broccoli, and some other plants, that the 12 inch spacing is too crowded. This year I have divided my garden into 16 inch squares, which gives 3 squares in 4 feet. Anyone else try this?

I am using 16 inch rectangles (16 inches in one direction and 12 in the other direction) for the tomatoes in the back row of my SFG beds that have amended soil rather than Mel's Mix. That gives me three tomato plants across the back of each of those two beds.

yep, I used to have 4x8 boxes and my grid was 4 squares by 6 squares...worked well for tightly seeded veggies like beets and carrots...now I do entire 4x4 boxes of nothing but carrots and beets so no grid needed and I can fit in more seeds.

I only have 12" grids but for tomatoes I tried 16-18" between them.

 Nah ,
I still use the set 12 " squares and move the plants over a bit for extra space if needed as all my 36 inch high raised beds work out almost exactly in square feet by the brick due to using red engineering bricks and 10 mm of mortar in the joints .

Like has also been mentioned I too often do a whole single crop bed at a times for pest control and total one session harvesting when getting ready for a canning day

Current single crop beds are :- Spanish Onions , Garlic , Peas , Rhubarb , Asparagus & finally my Brussels Sprouts. perennial Kale ( aka . Chou au d Benton )

Single beds but sucessionally sown :- All year round cauliflowers , leeks , Pointed Greyhound type  cabbages for  spring , summer , autumn & winter plus spring summer autumn and winter carrots
