Hello Everyone

I am not new to composting but always learning more, just recently moved into a new home with a sizeable yard. So I have become aggressive with composting. The general consensus for turning the pile is about every three days based on what most blogs and sites say. But Mel's chapter on composting states you turn it every day for compost to be ready in two weeks. That does not seem right to me and I don't like to immediately discard what someone like Mel states. So has anyone here turned their piles on a daily basis and had compost ready in two weeks? I have been just sticking my had deep in the pile to check for heat. Will be ordering a composting thermometer off Amazon today. Would like to hear others experiences.

If you put 'compost' in the search box on the left I think that the Berkeley method is about 10 Topics down. That may be what Mel is referring to. I'm not real familiar with it but you could check it out.

I second CapeCodesses' recommendation.  The Berkeley Compost thread has tons of information and because we've written over a long period of time and many piles you'll glean a lot from our experience.

I love the Berkeley system.  It's hard work to turn that frequently, but if you're able it's amazing to watch it breaking down before your eyes.  Very Happy

Ditto. Requires minimum size, thorough watering, high temperature, proper carbon-nitrogen ration, frequent turning and a compost thermometer. Love it. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t18500-compost-berkeley-18-day-hot-method?highlight=18+berkeley
