Re: Container Planting
Thanks for the tip on using 5 gallon pots. I started using 3 gallon pots for tomatoes and cucumbers. Have to get some 5 gallon pots for the broccoli seedlings. I put the Molokai sweet potatoes in 7 gallon pots and 3 asparagus plants in a 17" pot- are these pots big enough?
I started container gardening because some plants take up too much room in the SFG.
Thanks also for the idea of using compost in the bottom of the pots, then weed cloth, followed by MM.

Re: Container Planting
I'm voting for planting the watermelons together - since in nature the seeds end up clumped together / people plant melons/squashes in several per hill groups. It also puts your flowers closer to the same species for better pollination.Scorpio Rising wrote:OK, so I have 4 melons, 2 Blacktail Mountain watermelon and 2 Minnesota Midget (muskmelon). SHould I plant the watermelons together etc., or mix the containers with one of each plant variety?
New to melons and containers.![]()

Thanks, BPSF! Because SFG does interplanting. I will put them together unless I hear compelling evidence to the contrary! Thanks!

Didn't see this thread until now...
SR, when I have extra plants with no SFG space, I've started using grow bags. This is my first year to try them, but the plants I have growing in them are doing fantastic, and they're very cheap and easy to set up. I'll post a photo in the morning.
