One year ago, today.countrynaturals wrote:Carr fire exploded last night from 6,000 acres to 20,000 acres. Containment is down from 24% to 10%. It's moving our way, with road closures and evacuations in areas familiar to us -- Swasey Rd., Buenaventura, Eureka. There's ash on the deck railings and our moon was orange like Sanderson's last night. It's starting to get worrisome.
Re: Butterfly Junction
I had forgotten about this from last year. I was so disappointed in the cabbage, pak choi, and turnips, I had about given up on winter crops, but I will definitely plant a bunch of kohlrabi, now.countrynaturals wrote:I found the last of the kohlrabi I planted last year. We ate it raw and it was a real treat -- sweet, crunchy, AWESOME! My only complaint is that it takes so long and only produces 1 "fruit." Then I realized that it produces best in the "off" season. I can plant the seeds in Jiffy Pellets in the fall, then, as I pull up the spent summer crops, I can replace them with the kohlrabi seedlings. That space normally stays empty all winter, so I'll be turning "wasted" space into "productive" space. YEE HAH! Life is Good!

After 2 years, I'm finally getting an artichoke. It's bigger than a grape, now. I'll let you know how it progresses.sanderson wrote:I was going to try artichokes this year. They sell them at HD and I was going to try them. Maybe I can mist them in the morning? They do great in the Paso Robles area and it gets hot there.

Here is all you'll ever need to know, from Urban Farmer (thanks, OG).countrynaturals wrote:After 2 years, I'm finally getting an artichoke. It's bigger than a grape, now. Re: Butterfly Junction
The deer have found everything planted outside the Salad Bar -- including anything brave enough to venture through the fence holes. Katie and I are moving everything inside the fence that still shows any sign of life. My poor little Salad Bar will be bursting at the seams, but it's our only chance at having any homegrown veggies -- well, I do still have my kitchen balcony garden, but so far it hasn't produced much. Luckily, the weather is cooperating. If we were having our normal, blistering hot August, we'd have to throw in the trowel.

I love volunteer plants as they are usually strong and healthy. My best runner beans were grown in my compost heap and far out-produced my planted ones.

Asparagus Beans
I planted at least 5 varieties of beans this year, but the only thing to produce -- and actually thrive in this heat are the asparagus beans I planted from 2017 saved seeds. I read that if you save your best seeds from your worst conditions, it will pay off. This year's crop proves it! Ask me if I'll be saving seeds this year.
Re: Butterfly Junction
Summer finally caught up with us. I am now over a week behind in my grandiose 2nd season plans, with only a couple of nice days ahead. No more 107s, but several low triple-digits.
Re: Butterfly Junction
3 more 104 days in the forecast, so my 2nd season plans are now officially canceled.countrynaturals wrote:Summer finally caught up with us. I am now over a week behind in my grandiose 2nd season plans, with only a couple of nice days ahead. No more 107s, but several low triple-digits.
I'll take the next couple of weeks off, then start my fall garden as soon as the triple-digits go away. At least July and most of August are history, so the heat can't last too much longer, and hot days mean more swimming, so that's the trade-off for less gardening.
