Grids: Colored PVC & Fittings
I thought I would start a new thread to share what I had found that I did not know even existed.
I found COLORED PVC pipe!!!
It is considered Furniture Grade PVC and comes in 1/2" and up
and Fittings
You can even get Slip Tee fittings
You can even get it at Home Depot and a 1/2" x 5' section costs b/n $5-$9
1/2" Colored PVC Fittings and Pipe at Home Depot
Home Depot Colored PVC Pipe
That was what I found...

Pretty, pretty. Expensive but pretty. I was at HD today for flowers and more shade cloth. Wish I had known about these new items. But, my husband is probably just as happy I didn't as the 8 10-foot pieces of white PVC were pretty cheap. I have thought about spray painting the white PVC.

Festive grids in the future! There are colored metal tomato cages too!

Woo-hoo! Except for the price... Think I'll stick w/ white pvc or grey electrical conduit & paint them with the plastic spray paint...
Re: Grids: Colored PVC & Fittings
Thanks for sharing this great find. They really are pretty and would add color to the garden before everything has grown up.

Re: Grids: Colored PVC & Fittings
Yeah, I just came across these a couple of weeks ago when I was shopping for a hard-to-find fitting. Love the colors - all kinds of possibilities. I didn't buy any then, but I bookmarked it.
The schedule 40 is okay, but what really bothers me about it is that it usually comes really dirty, and the brand marks and upc labels don't come off. But it's cheap and functions well, so for out in the garden, it's acceptable. I know I'd love how those nice clean and colorful pipes and fittings would look out there.

Re: Grids: Colored PVC & Fittings
Kate, I feel the same way about the sched 40. I just went sifting through some to find some that were fairly clean.
I think I may do as Marie said and paint them.
Of all the fittings, the ones that had a vertical connection really jumped out at me.
I can see using them to build covers or to add them to the grid and then make tomato cages...(insert daydream music here)
I ended up getting some sched 40 pvc and crosses to build a grid. I found a plumbing supply store and they had them for 25% less the the big box stores.

Hello Sanderson. What did you use to secure the white PVC to the wooden sides? And did you put the entire 10' piece as one unit without cutting?...and then put the cross pieces either above or below the 10' pieces?sanderson wrote:Pretty, pretty. Expensive but pretty. Re: Grids: Colored PVC & Fittings
Hi Cannonball, Are you referring to using PVC as grids or making trellises? I personally don't use PVC for the grids but some folks do. That can either be a tiny bit smaller than the box and be placed directly on the Mel's Mix. Or make them larger to sit on the rims of the wood sides.
If you are talking about using PVC for trellis frames, I cut the height I want and then cut the top piece the size that will work using 1/2" PVC elbow fittings. This is a photo where I used 2 trellises to sandwich pole beans. Instead of using 2 elbow I used four 3-way fittings to keep them parallel.

Hi Sanderson, I was referring to PVC for the grids. I wondered about laying 1/2" PVC on top of each other cross-wise, rather than cutting the PVC into many 1' pieces and connecting them with a cross piece. I think it would be simpler to have that on-top setup, although I'm not sure if laying PVC on one on top of another would be workable? The connection point would likely need some kind of connector to hold the 2 perpendicular pieces together.
And I am more inclined to have the PVC sit on TOP of the wood sides.
PS. This past year, I did use the string-trimmer line for the grids, as someone else indicated, thinking that that would be indestructable. It looked great and worked fine until now...but it did break, thus threw that "indestructable" theory out the window.

CROSS FITTINGS FOR PEX OR PVC PIPE GRIDS
Hi all,
Where does one find inexpensive CROSS FITTINGS for PEX or PVC pipe for constructing grids. Home Depot does not have any. I'll need a few hundred of them for the almost 500 linear ft of raised beds.
I've tried a few companies that make these items and they can't even refer me to a company that makes them.

Re: Grids: Colored PVC & Fittings
When I punch "pvc cross fitting" into a home depot in Asheville, I come up with lots of hits, including ones that say they have 20+ in stock. They aren't particularly cheap. It depends on what pipe size you want. They seem to range from 1.76 for 1/2 pipes to $5 for bigger.Fishtell wrote:Hi all,

One cheap source, at least in theory, is aliexpress. I see cross fit PVC parts going for as little as 73 cents for 20 mm (3/4 inch?) pvc plus 2.76 shipping -- free shipping for orders over $10.
There's a lot of caveats when using aliexpress. For one, you have to be patient. They give you an estimated delivery date. Ignore that. That date disappears the minute you place your order. The actual date is usually just before the end of the guaranteed shipping window, which is out 75 days. There's other caveats, so be sure to mention if you're thinking of going that route.

Re: Grids: Colored PVC & Fittings
Our local Lowe's carries them in "bulk", bags of 10 or 20, at a fraction of the cost of individual ones.
You might also check out plumbing supply houses, such as this one:
