Hi, I'm Sandi and I'm new to gardening period! I am preparing a raised 4 x 8 bed. So my first question is can I grow blueberries in SFG? How many per square? Thanks Cool

Hi Sandi and welcome to the SFG forum. I believe you will find the SFG experience quite enjoyable and the folks on this site even more so.

I am still a novice and don't have any experience in blueberries in SFG's. however if you use the "Search" box in the upper left side of the page, and type blueberry there were 19 threads listed for blueberries.

Hi Sandi! Glad you found us on the SFG forum! You want to grow blueberries? Me too, but I am not planning on putting them in my SFG garden, I actually think I will put them out in my yard...

I like to reserve my SFG for stuff that needs me more than bushes will: tomatoes, peppers, cukes, melons, radishes, lettuces, spinach, the list goes on.

Great to hear your plans, looking forward to some pictures! glad you\'re here

Hello from beautiful British Columbia Empty Thanks

Post  sandijack 3/27/2016, 8:14 pm

Thanks for the reply Scorpio Rising. I think I may be able to put a few plants outside my beds. I live in a complex so only have a small area for garden but could 'cheat' a little and I doubt anyone would notice. We have a meadow below our complex so our beds can go there, and I'm sure a few blueberry plants could survive.

Hi Sandi. Welcome from Atlanta, GA!

I grow bb's, but they're in our clay, not SFG. I CAN tell you that they like acid. I use pine bark nuggets for mulch and that's about all I do to them... I've got 7 bushes & get about 3 gallons every year. IF I can beat the birds, lol!

Thanks for the tip. We have clay in our soil here as well and I can certainly get some pine needles. I am excited about this!

glad you\'re here  sandijack happy hi
from Kelejan : Regional Host, Canada.

I live relatively near you in Castlegar, B.C.  Come and visit us in the Canadian Regional thread when you have settled down in this, your welcome thread. You can, of course, wander all over the Forum reading whatever takes your interest.

I have four blueberry bushes in my garden and they are not in the SFG beds but outside them and they are growing in soil covered by pins needles and wood chips for mulch.  They were planted plast year and I had a few blueberries but I am hoping they will be well established this year and I am hoping for a larger harvest so that I do not have to buy any this year.

Make sure that when you get blueberries you have at least two kinds so that they can fertilise each other as I believe one kind only is not successful.

Wow! that was quick, sandijack, three minutes.

So, you used to live in Barbados and now you are in cool British Columbia. A bit different climate, I'll wager.

Not having any luck with the pictures!

Good job on the pic, Sandi!  I work from an iPad, and it is a bit convoluted, better in the current situation!

Pretty!  Food is better from your garden, though in my opinion!  A good read is Nan Chase "Eat Your Yard" for creating a food producing yard....might be better if you are long term in the location.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I love being back in B.C. and I'm so looking forward to trying my hand at this gardening stuff. Was in Mexico for 2 1/2 years after I came back from Barbados. Glad to be home!

Ok, I have to admit...when I was scrolling down through the replies and the picture popped up, I thought the bush in the middle was dog or some other animal...I guess that's what I get for being online at 1230am.

I reckon you are not OT cpl100.

I visited Butchart? Gardens many years ago and the day was wet, but the rain was so soft and warm it was beautiful. It gave a misty haze to the scene.

The garden was made on the site of a disused quarry. I found the basic design was beautiful along with all the trees and shrubs.

I thought that the flowers were overdone.  But then they have the advantage of teams of gardeners and loads of greenhouses so they just switch flowers around as soon as they start fading. I felt that part of it was somewhat artificial. I guess we all have a different take on gardening. You will perhaps think that I am not a perfectionist.

I was born and raised in England but it was not  until I came to Canada that I started to research my ancestry.  I discovered that I had passed through many places where my ancestors lived but now do not have the chance to visit them except via Internet.
That's life. Very Happy

Have you also noticed that where you live right now, you may have not visited the places in your area that visitors do?

I've had the pleasure to visit the gardens 3 times. Once during the Vietnam war when my then husband was stationed at Fort Lewis. A second time with my three kids on one of our summer great American adventures. Third time with DH. Beautiful.
