How to get rid of moss?

I must have purchased some bad compost. Two summers ago I noticed a bit of moss in my beds. Last year it really grew. I'm not looking forward to what i will find this Spring. What is the safest way to remove it permanently?

Hey! Welcome PatCee! I think I would just pull it out and start fresh. Moss is kinda easy to get rid of....

I've tried for two years to pull it out. It must be seeding before I get it out, becausse it's really spreading. I feel like I once heard that spreading lime would kill it in a lawn, but I'm not sure I remember correctly and I don't want to apply lime to a vegetable garden unless it's a safe thing to do.

Once you get it pulled again, I'd put down a nice thick mulch of newspaper to smother any "seedlings." Water it down really well...

 Moss has developed in one of my beds .. it must be because it is slightly acidic from the bullock/ steer sourced manure heavy compost I put in it the bed . It also got a serious watering all year  from rain ( a mild form of Carbonic acid ) far too often .  Two things  can change the situation ..to  less acidic quickly  by using garden lime powder or adding crushed limestone as fine as sand ..  both help neutralise the acid.

 Bad drainage .. as in not actually allowing ( too much watering ) or being able to get the surface dry  because of shade or little sun & wind  also helps moss to grow . The north ( permanently shaded )  side of my office roof that is under a big oak tree  has a thick blanket of moss on it that the birds are currently using it to harvest for worms , grubs and nesting materials .

 The other is to use a chemical moss killer which contains a form of iron  or copper  I'm not happy at doing as I want to get my beds back to a more natural state ,plus both the copper & iron treatment also sends the soil more acidic.

 Earlier this year I've been lifting off the moss and turning the bed over then adding a compost made with a lot of straw & garden veg ..no animal dungs or acidic oak leaves.

 I won't know if this has worked until a few months time when temperatures start to rise above 7 o C. 
 If it has helped , I'll research how to make up a slightly alkaline or less acidic compost with plants only & use it in the moss bed .

  This last year , March 2015 to March 2016 has seen us get the most recorded rain levels in the UK since the 1700's some where in the region of 47 inches a mere five miles away from us .
Unfortunately no matter how many emails & knee mails I've sent to HQ weather control I still cannot change the amount of rain we get .
