Re: FEB - Drawing for Forum Members Only
Four years ago I was involved in a serious auto accident by a young fool who was texting and driving instead of paying attention to the stop lights.
I was busted up pretty good and basically only had full use of my right arm, and with garden season coming up fast I started searching around for something on gardening techniques that would at least allow me to have tomatoes and cukes.
I got ahold of the old SFG book and liked the idea but no way was I going to be able to dig, so I ended up with Earthboxes. They did a pretty good job, but they are limited IMHO.
I am pretty much recovered now, but my wife got me a copy of the ANSFG for Christmas, and I really like the idea now there is no digging and caught the SFG bug.

Re: FEB - Drawing for Forum Members Only
Milt, I completely agree about the improvement no-digging has had on Square Foot Gardening.
IMO opinion the biggest advance on the first edition. No way would I have been able too dig six inches deep into my almost bedrock.

Oh, me too! I've got heavy clay... I would have had to bring in a heavy-duty tiller...
Thank you, Mel!

I bet by now if you dig under your sFG beds you will find that the clay has turned into something more like loam with lots of life in it.
Re: FEB - Drawing for Forum Members Only
2015 was my first year with SFG. I discovered Mel's All New Square Foot Gardening book in a store where my wife like's to buy books. I took it off the shelf and went over to a reading area. I knew as soon as I flipped through the book that I had to buy it. It did not take long for me to start planning my first two 4x4 beds. Then I found this SFG forum and started to document my progress in the "First Time SFG in Canada" thread. The results from SFG that first year were amazing. It's been a great learning experience and I'm really looking forward to season two. I am very thankful to Mel and all the wonderful people on this forum.

I am not exactly sure! I had to check when I joined the forum which was March 2010, so it would most likely have been either the previous summer or that winter.

I started Fall of 2010. It is a steady part of my life and I have learned so much.
I really want this trowel to put up in a frame!
I would give the book away at a drawing at my next presentation in May.

I will do the Drawing really late on the 24th. Like 00:01 Pacific Time on the 25th in case night owls respond. Then I will post the winner! I will need the winner's mailing address.
There will be more contests in March, April, May and June.

Re: FEB - Drawing for Forum Members Only
It was really fun reading through peoples stories of when they started. I am supposedly doing homework so this was a nice break.
I got the first edition of SFG in 1982/3, we were newly wed and in school. I had 4 squares at that rental. I was lucky that I had access to lots of rabbit poo to mix into those beds. They were raised but not framed, which is good because we were too broke for anything but a couple packets of seed.
Our first house we bought had a lumber pile AND a horse manure pile. I think it had a roof too.... that leaked. I made 4 4x8 beds, dug that manure into the DG (decomposed granite is tough to dig but it makes a lovely vermiculite type part when mixed with lots of old manure, I did not realize I was pretty much making MM. just thought of that right now).
When we moved back to Montana I put in a huge garden of berms that I planted intensively though not quite SFG. Then an old bookcase became a raised bed for lettuce. etc. I still do not subscribe to ANSFG, why fix what ain't broke? But I realize that is part of where I am at.
I do not care about the contest but did want to join the conversation. Now I better get back at it.

It has indeed been great to hear these stories. I'll be gathering them up and sending them to Mel - he will LOVE it.
Thanks everyone

bsielicki wrote:Well, I just discovered this method about 3 weeks ago! We recently purchased a home after years of renting, giving me the chance to finally put in that backyard garden I've always wanted. I ordered a bunch of gardening books from the library, one of which happened to be the SFG book. After reading it, I'm totally hooked on this method! As a stroke of luck, the previous owners had built some beds and left them in the backyard, so now I know what to do with them!
I'm currently planning my first garden to put in when spring comes, so I'm excited to make this work!
An excellent statement....congratulations on your victory...
