Yes, about the 13 bald eagles. What a tragedy. Now that I see how important it is for 2 working parents, the death of even one mature eagle seems a tragedy. The penalty, if they ever catch the person, seems too light, in my opinion.

Is E8 okay? Why doesn't he pull the right leg back under him? Never mind. Dad (?) just bought a fish and E8 is hogging it! He is a noisy and feisty one!

Do bald eagles get their white heads in their first year?

I remember seeing a golden eagle up  close once (nearly got my Jazz as we were walking) and the feathers were markedly different from adults.

They live a long time, and are not ready to reproduce until they have the full white head.  4 to 5 years, I see them a lot on my way to and from work!  They are truly eye catching, large, and majestic.

I caught a dramatic moment on the Florida cam a few seconds ago. There was a large piece of meat that the larger one was worrying with and the smaller one pinched it from right under his beak and then tried to swallow it but it seem to be too large for him/her.

I thought, good for him/her, but also it had problems trying to swallow it.  The larger bird then retaliated and there was a bit of tussling for this meat. Finally, the larger one wrenched it away and was able to swallow it.  I expect that will keep it going for some time while the smaller on can play catch-up.

During last years nestings, a young one could not get a piece down the hatch, mom worked and eventually removed it from throat

Checked on the Florida eagles (the first in this thread, and the eagles seem to be OK, probably nearing their full size but not doing much else except sleeping or looking around right now.

However, there is a little activity; a small bird, (compared to the eagles) has been hoping to the edge of the nest, picking up a pick of stalk, then disappearing underneath the nest.  This has happened six times times since I have been watching, with one of the eagles taking notice each time.

I am thinking this small bird is building nest somewhere in the tree, perhaps right underneath the eagles' nest as the bird only takes a few seconds before returning.
I hope it does not go too near the sitting tenants.

A FEW MINUTES LATER:

Both birds quite active now, taking it in turns to spread their wings. Now they seem huge when they do that, both of their  wingspans are larger than the diameter of the nest. I feel sure they will soon start branching as they are standing on the edge of the nest.

Small bird still hanging around, keeping out of the way of the big birds.

I just feel that today is when the older eagle youngster will be stepping on that branch he is standing next to.  Both of them keep peering over the edge of the nest, and spreading their wings.

I will be lucky to actually see them do something.  It will be, Oh!, they're gone.

That Florida nest is teaming with bioactivity on the leftovers, between the sticks and no doubt on the birds themselves.

Yes, TD.  When the fledglings have flown, the little birds will have a feast day.

KJ, You made me look! E7 is really getting confident. I also noticed that they are using their feet to hold down dinner while the use their beaks to tear off morsels. I was thinking that it was a skill they still needed to learn. I wonder how they figure out fishing?

Just checked a few minutes ago.  The eaglet is really out on the branch and Mom (or Dad) is on a higher branch supervising.  I expect the eaglet may take off tomorrow on its first flight and I expect that will be the last we see of it.

The second one should start the same behavior in another day or so. then they will be taught to catch their own food and the patents job will be over for another year.

I wonder, as time goes on, will they recognize their offspring?

I just watched as the one that was out on the branch turned around and then jumped (flew?) with wings outstretched back into the nest. Very interesting.

The older eaglet has been hopping back and forth from branch to nest and i really think he is actually flying.

The younger one is doing a lot of wing flapping but not yet branching. He seems to be several days behind and will eventually have the nest to himself.

The older eaglet just flew up to a branch a couple or three feet above the nest. I think this branch is called the "attic" according to the diagram of the branches on the website.
