Brussels Sprouts - Spring
Howdy all!
So am VERY excited for the upcoming spring & summer growing seasons!
As a native Englishman living in NJ I yearn for some homegrown Brussels.
I tried in the fall and think I got them in too late. They are still growing (thanks to the mild Winter so far!) but only about 8 inches high.
So I believe you can also get a spring crop in as well.
I've read various different opinions, but it seems to start them indoors for about 8 weeks before they go outside.
Now I'm not sure when to put them out. My average last frost is right around April 15th. So if I put them out then I need start them about mid-feb - does that sound right to folks or am I missing the boat???
Any advice is MUCH appreciated.
Thanks
Simon

Hey, Simon! My son's name is Simon too! According to this article, any new plantings you put in it may be more important to count back from your FIRST frost date. Your over wintering spring plant will be your summer harvest.

Simon - thanks - I'll take a look at that....
I'm definitely having trouble deciding on the right timeframe, I might just try a few and see what happens!!!!
Thanks again

I'm in the same boat. I just bought my first pack of bs seeds, Catskill - harvest ready in 95 days from transplant, and I'm trying to decide whether to plant them now or wait. I think, like you, I'll start some now, as I just read that the leaves on this variety are fabulous! If they bolt in summer I'll harvest some seeds.

Re: Brussels Sprouts - Spring
Growing Brussels sprouts is different in the States than the UK in that here , particularly in the north, the winters are much to cold to sustain life if you are a BS plant. Sow the seeds now, harden them off any time after the true leaves emerge and pluck them in the garden. They can tolerate frost ,but not a hard freeze below 30°F. They take months mature. Mine is ake more than 6 months.

Great! Thanks, Camp. I was hoping you'd jump in here.
Do they need to be shaded during the heat of summer so they won't bolt?

Nope, full sun, plenty of water, and need to be fed several times during the season.CapeCoddess wrote:Great! Thanks, Camp. I was hoping you'd jump in here.
