Internet Problems
While I have a moment with internet, I wanted to let all of you know I have been off line since yesterday. Whether the problems return, I don't know, just wanted to let you know I'm still here. Amazing how much work I have gotten done during the blackout.

Re: Internet Problems
Both my computers have been receiving a lot of TLC from a man that can at his home .
I now have two working laptops , one with Microsoft Windoze 10 on one section of the hard drive & Ubuntu as the other part of the split hard drive , the other computer no longer has a trace of Microsoft , as it has been wiped off entirely , there is just Ubuntu on it .
I'm setting things up so that as MS 10 stops me accessing all my older equipment's because the equipment drivers won't get updated by the makers who are HP ( is HP part of MS these days ? ) like my two six yr old laser printers , a quality flat bed Epsom scanner , several canon cameras and a couple of web cams , I will be able to use Ubuntu to operate them instead .
I've managed to get a of differing types of work done this last week or so ..I've have enjoyed the rest from the computers as well .
One thing to make you all jealous ...
I sorted out my seed lists ,realised I needed a shed load ..so I wrote a list of our needs and took it with us when we went to the local big garden centre that is part of a national chain.
This fairly local garden centre has cleared all the seeds off the displays to make space for the Christmas tat / rubbish , as they don't sell many seeds this time of the year .
I sorted through two big window boxes 3 foot x 1 x 1 foot of these seeds ( there were nine such boxes ) At the checkout I paid £ 26 for 52 packets of seeds ( mainly veg ) .
On getting back home after a wee bit of bed rest I totaled the normal price of the seeds and found that at the usual, price it would have incurred a cost of £ 98 .30 ( $ 147 USD ).. that makes for a saving to me of £ 73.30 converted to dollars,,,, that's roughly a saving of $ 110 USD

Re: Internet Problems
yea, plantoid! I love love love bargains. As for computers, all I have is an iPad. Usually that is enough, but since you can't print or plug into a USB, that limits me sometimes. I have a robust PC at work, so that is nice.
I wish my garden center had seeds on clearance, I looked and didn't see any! Maybe I will just ask, perhaps they are put away somewhere....
Glad you are back on-line, and that you got alot done in your black-out!

Not at the big box stores, they are just GONE! No garden things anywhere. I found my bulb planter at the local garden center. Christmas stuff everywhere already (my pet peeve, still haven't had Halloween for heaven's sake) let alone Thanksgiving..... jeesh.

Re: Internet Problems
We are overrun with computer related stuff ... home office PC (still on Windows XP), Flight Sim (Windows 7), Laptop (Windows 10), Laptop (Windows XP), two Tablets (Android), Smartphone (Android), two Laser Printers, an Inkjet Printer, etc., etc.
We dropped Bell for our telephone service years ago and went to a Rogers Home Phone. We have Rogers cable TV and Rogers Internet. I'm thinking of cutting back to just Basic Cable since we stream from the Internet most of what we watch using a Roku 3 device. We may go as far as cutting cable TV altogether and just use a high definition antenna to pick up locally broadcast TV channels. We are trying out Ooma VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) for the phone and will soon drop the Rogers Home Phone. We will also switch our Internet service to another provider which will give better bandwidth for less money.

Re: Internet Problems
A car plowed into a pole here on Monday and we were without power for 4 hours. I work at home on my computer... I don't know what to do without it, LOL! So I gathered cow "stuff" for my compost piles, puttered in my garden as long as I could and then picked up a book.
I had the best seed haul ever this year - on another garden website I frequent someone had been given all the seeds from a store that were past date (2014) and was sharing them with anyone that was a vet or a vet's family for the cost of postage. I got over 150 packets of seeds in two purchases that totaled $14 for shipping. I sent one set to a ministry that works with addicts and in some of their locations they grow a portion of their own food. I've shared a bunch of them with other local gardeners and am set for a few years.

I went to Home Depot for their $4.99 hanging baskets (only 4 left at that one) and when I walked inside, there was a whole section of artificial Christmas trees and decorations! At least they weren't playing Christmas music.Scorpio Rising wrote:sanderson wrote:Thanks for reminding us that seeds could be half price now, or anytime soon.

TD - do you have a house alarm system tied into your phone? It will not work w/ VOIP.trolleydriver wrote:We are overrun with computer related stuff ... home office PC (still on Windows XP), Flight Sim (Windows 7), Laptop (Windows 10), Laptop (Windows XP), two Tablets (Android), Smartphone (Android), two Laser Printers, an Inkjet Printer, etc., etc.

AM ... We do not have an alarm system. That VOIP limitation will be a consideration if we ever get one. There are cellular alarm systems available so that may be one alternative.

Just wanted to make sure... I used to work for an install company that did low-volt camera systems, etc.
