The chickens have come home to roost!
We got 6 Barred Rocks when they were 4 days old. They've been kept at my wife's workplace to get socialized and nearly loved to death. Today we brought them home to their new chicken tractor. I wish I had put a security camera in so we could watch them after we put them to bed!
Birds can see color, so they got it...
It just needs tail lights and a license plate...
Dutch doors-the entire opening is covered with fencing but the upper part disappeared in the shadow...
Still had to add the water container and another perch...
The first brave chick, thinking about it. They all needed a helping hand to go in the first time...
Bugs and worms and dandelions-they had quite a feast their first day in their new home!

Ha! Love it and love the movable feast. Are these meat and egg hens or just egg? What a great setup!
Re: The chickens have come home to roost!
I love the "hen house" !!! Its a nice set up. I have to give my hens greens, its the mom in me making them have a well rounded diet. I even give them lamb burger we have cooked. I save a bit back for them. Chickens being omnivorous they eat everything. I like orange yolks and thats what the greens do for them. Taste is way better.

That's the cutest chicken house I've ever seen! It looks so cozy inside, I bet the chickens are going to LOVE their new home!

I am so jealous! I want chickens so badly! Did you design your coop or follow plans?
Nothing beats fresh eggs! Congratulations!

This is a perfect example of to much time on your hands, if you were still gardening the old fashion way you wouldnt be finished until the fall with your chicken taj mahal. HAHAHA

I bet they are for eggs chop..... barred's are for laying. But the other big clue is that they were "nearly loved to death by the office girls" You cannot get away with eathing chickens that the wife's friends have probably named.

Re: The chickens have come home to roost!
As I said when I saw it in person a few days ago... THAT'S IMPRESSIVE. I'm sure the chickens will love it and lord knows you've got enough yard to keep them occupied.
Re: The chickens have come home to roost!
WOW Boffer that is awesome! I have some chickens, but nothing fancy like that! you get a dancing banana from me!!
Re: The chickens have come home to roost!
Let's see, we have: Lady bug, June bug, Love bug, May bug, Jitter bug, and Ugly bug. I think if they ended up in the stew pot, I'd be dead meat too! Heck, Liz wouldn't even use my name suggestion: Stink bug (AKA Stinky!)
I have trouble building things from plans because they never specify materials that I have in my "I'm gonna save this cause I might need it someday pile"!
I start with an idea, look at the pile of 'stuff', and go from there.
The base...
All butt joints were bisquited, glued, and screwed...
At this point, the only thing I had spent money on was the white floor register vent next to the window. Note the bead board paneling in the nest box, and vinyl flooring on the wall for easy clean up. I just 'happened' to have some around...

Re: The chickens have come home to roost!
That is so totally awesome. I am close to a loss for words! But never fear, I'll think of some! First thing I did was tell my daughter to have her DH check it out! Steve, you are a building genius.
Now all I want to know is -- when do you sleep?
I used a cordless drill and a power stapler this week to build a 1'x1'x6" sample box. I thought that was pretty impressive until I saw your project!

Re: The chickens have come home to roost!
How did I miss this post!! I was wondering how your chicken tractor turned out & I love it! I still don't have mine yet. But I made homemade apple butter for DH the other day to sweeten him up, so I'll start bugging him again about one. I finally posted new pictures of my flock on my blog, Diggin' With Dixie, if you want to see them. I have 4 new chicks that just hatched out & another broody hen setting.
Re: The chickens have come home to roost!
