I like to cut from the middle of my greens, younger leaves, less dirt, but I only read about about suggestions to cut from the outside.  I leave the leaves that are touching the ground and perhaps a few more above them.

Any comments?

I would be interested in reading some comments about how people handle different kinds of lettuce. I am growing romaines now and one neighbor says to cut them all at once and hope they grow back; others prefer to pick various lettuces leaf by leaf. I did that last thing before and got very tall stalks that soon had trouble supporting themselves. Didn't seem like a great result at the time.

P.S.: When I plucked, I did it from the outside, as those were the larger leaves and would be the first to start yellowing and dying off if I just let them alone.

Yes Marc. For romaine I slice the whole thing at the bottom and yes, it comes back.  However, we are talking different quantities here I'm sure.  We make dinner for 8 and 8 lunches so that is 16 large servings so leaf by leaf wouldn't work for us.

For chard, spinach and leaf lettuce I cut the outer leaves off to eat. Once the spinach starts to want to bolt, the whole thing comes off. I have not grown Romaines. Mesclun mix I just cut with scissors. If you want the whole head at a time, I would take the whole head, and stagger my plantings to allow that.

I want whatever gives me the most produce! Very Happy

Scorpio, when you plucked lettuce leaves from the outside, did you get a towering stalk like I did? I was growing Marvel of Four Seasons, by the way.

Marc, I have been taking the outer leaves from my Romain Lettuce.  I was away for about 10 days and when I got back the lettuce had grown into relatively tall towers.

No, Marc, but I think MO4S is a butterhead, and I would probably harvest the whole head. I love butterhead lettuce, wonderful texture and flavor. It is pretty, too!
