"Free" lettuce

First, I was totally excited today to see that my lettuce that got too bitter last year reseeded in the garden this spring. I was able to transplant about 20 (!!!) lettuce plants into my new SFG's. Question though, it is leaf lettuce, not head lettuce, so is it still only 4/square?? Spinach is nine. I planted it closer to nine per square but I wasn't sure how they would transplant so I added a few extra in case they don't take.

I think it depends on how big you want the lettuce to get before you use it. I have leaf lettuce in my beds right now, 4/square--and it's been growing fast and filling the squares right up before I even get a chance to harvest it all. I think though, that if you harvest smaller pieces of lettuce you could probably squeeze in a few more, maybe 9/sq. like spinach. My spinach plants are a lot smaller than my lettuce--but I use it small as "baby" spinach for salads, etc. as more room is needed in the square.

Another idea is that you could just thin the lettuce out as it gets larger & throw it into your salads/sandwiches.

Nice garden, Clarker. I need to get some netting like that. And I hope my lettuce will look as good once it finally looks like lettuce!

milaneyjane I agree with Clarker. Pick the lettuce leaves as you need them, probably a few every day. They shouldn't get too big that way. And if they do, just pull one or two.

I just planted the Burpee strips. I wasn't sure how much to plant. It comes wrapped up like ribbon (only flat) and you cut a strip the size you want to plant. I did three strips across a square. I'm sure that's enough. I hope it's not too much. It was really flavorful lettuce, and tender. I did two squares of that type and two squares of butter leaf lettuce (3 per square - because I had 6 plants) "Free" lettuce Herz
