Gardening challenges in Southeastern NC
Today I started a series of 6 classes run by the New Hanover County cooperative extension service called Back to Basics "Gardening Challenges in Southeastern NC". Fifty dollars for 2 hr. classes. It was designed for folks that don't want to do the extensive Master Gardeners classes.
The first class was on soil and plant nutrition and was heavy on the need for soil testing. I just sat there and kept my mouth shut and thought, "I'm so glad I do SFG and don't have much to do with that". But I did find out that the test is $4 for NC residents Nov- Apr and free the rest of the year. There was a lot about how plants look when they are lacking in certain nutrients that did sound interesting.
2. insects and diseases
3. vegetable gardening
4. pruning (looking forward to this one)
5. annuals and perennials
6. woody ornamentals, trees, shrubs and vines.
I do hope to get clues as to why nothing in my garden grew or produced this year. Worst year I've ever had including row gardening and SFG.

Re: Gardening challenges in Southeastern NC
I'll be interested to hear what you find out. I remember seeing pictures of your gardens that looked very productive.
Cool about the classes, and that's a great price. It's nice to have well-taught classes like that which don't demand as much time as the full-on MG coursework.
Re soil testing, that's really cheap. I don't think we in SFG are at all exempt from having problems that soil testing could help with. For one thing, all our mixes are likely to be quite different, regardless of whether we get the proportions right.
