Re: Retirement may be delayed
I have been training my successor since January, in March I declared I would only work 3 days a week. She can do it now but calls me to double check herself still. It seems to me that every job I have had took a minimum of 3 months to actually get competent at. There is nothing like training someone to get a glimpse at all the stuff one does so automatically one does not realize it is happening but is not obvious to some one trying to learn it.
Yolo, I hope you are enjoying the process.

Re: Retirement may be delayed
Yolos,
That is really great that your boss would do that for you! So many now just don't see the value in transitioning a new person in. It is so hard to put a value on institutional knowledge!
Hey did I mention, only one more day! Wow I can't imagine the excitement that must bring! I am so close, just 81 months to go for me. Ugh...
Of coarse this means the expectations are high for you to be posting some really AWSOME pictures of you garden.
Wishing you a great gardening adventure.
Craig
By the way, I'll be at work by 8 on Monday...

The count down is over. I am now a 0 digit midget. Transferring all responsibility to the new employee today. I will now let her be the one to worry about properly backing up our computer systems, paying vendors on time, collecting overdue accounts, etc. etc. I am now free of all that worry. I still have to complete training her but all the financial and reporting duties are her responsibility.

YOLOS
Get her to sign off all the disciplines
ie .. Those that you have taught enough knowledge to allow her to carry on doing them without you.
Then once you're totally free of that naughty four letter word called " Work " change you house phone number and mobile phone number as well as your email addy

Haha! I love that suggestion! Kind of like winning the lottery, isn't it? Hit it big and then move out of town quick!

AtlantaMarie wrote:Yea, Yolos! How was Retirement Day 1??
Spent 10 hours inside working on stuff from the office. I am trying to clean up 16 years of paperwork so someone can figure out what I did and why I did it. What a let down. I am more stressed now than when I was working. Still have lots to do to clean up store rooms and filing cabinets at work, finish training the new replacement, clean my filthy house, do my 2014 income tax return, and maybe walk out into the garden to see what is still alive. Thank goodness for the rain last weekend and the rain a couple days ago.
Yea, I just looked up the extension for filing my 2014 income tax return. I have until Oct 15 to file it. So that is a big relief.

Holos, that is just the mop up,work, don't let it stress you out too much. Get the new person trained, and take 1 hour at the end of the training days to "tidy". You will get it done. And if you don't, your replacement can go on a pitch-fest after you are done done! Not like you are selling a house! Sometimes it gives the replacement a chance to get oriented to what the job entails long term to see what you have accumulated!

Re: Retirement may be delayed
My retirement has temporarily ended. All my plans are now on hold. The person we hired to replace me turned out to be incompetent. I was called in by the owner to do an audit of her work. What a mess. Among other things, she has not properly reconciled the largest bank account since Sept 30. She was fired on Friday. Now we have to find someone to replace me again and to be trained. Oh well, such is life.

You, yolos, are a great employee! That is beyond gracious to come out of retirement to help out your firm. Kudos to you! Hope your boss realizes this, I bet he/she does! I know I would!

The bright side is it's happening in January instead of prime gardening season.

Re: Retirement may be delayed
Right on. I told the owner that March 1 is my deadline for full time rescue. After that, only part time until April 1. We will see whether we can both meet that deadline. In the mean time, I am putting off building another compost bin and any additional SFG beds. But I will say, the money sure will be nice. Extra that I did not plan for and can spend at will.martha wrote:The bright side is it's happening in January instead of prime gardening season.

Re: Retirement may be delayed
This makes me realize how happy I am now that four years ago my late business partner's wife stole my half of the business I started years ago.
I have absolutely no responsibility for the past and I could care less, especially after reading yolo's saga.
It took me some time to come to terms with it but I have reconciled with my feelings and am so happy now.

Re: Retirement may be delayed
So sorry to hear it, Yolos! But as others said, at least it's not prime gardening season, and extra money is always nice.
Re: Retirement may be delayed
Nice to know you're missed, Yolos! Sorry it had to happen that way, though...
Re: Retirement may be delayed
All right, I am now retired again. Hopefully for good. I will have to go back in a day or two after the first of April to make sure the new person prepares the monthly financial statements correctly. But I have no doubt that she will be good at this job.
Soooooooooooooooooo, on to gardening full time.

Yea YOLOS! Retired at last.
I'm still on until 12/30 this year. Can hardly wait...and it's why I decided to start gardening. (That and reading all the horrible stuff about what we are putting in our bodies due to current farming practices!)
Enjoy all that time!
