Retirement may be delayed

Thanks Boffer (or Sanderson) for the above scrolling cheers for my retirement in 3 more days.  But, now full retirement may be delayed a bit.  We hired someone to take my place and the day after my replacement started, someone who works partially in the accounting department quit without any notice.  Soooooooooooooooo - not only am I training the person replacing me, but I am also trying to train a temp to fill the place of the other person who quit.    Also, it is taking me twice as long to train someone to replace me than I had anticipated.  For instance, it takes me 2 hours to balance all 9 of our bank accounts but it took me about 8 hours to train the new replacement how to balance the different accounts (who woulda thunk it).  Because I have worked for a great company for the last 16 years, I have offered to work every Tuesday and Thursday until they are both trained.  But I told them I could not work full time because my garden just won't wait.

It takes wayyyy longer to show someone how to do something than to just do it.

Yolos,  So, Friday is your last day as Full time, and then you will be 40% until everyone is trained.  That is nice of you to help the company that way.  At least you will gain 60% as a gardener.  (I retired and returned the following Monday as half time/straight pay/no benefits.  It wasn't a bad way to ease into retirement.)

PS, Helpful hint to those who never log out. I had to log out and back in before I could see the banner.

I saw Yolo's banner and became green with envy! Plus it was real cool way to announce retirement.

Absolutely! We become so much more efficient over time and so many things that are arcane or even pretty nonsensical to an outsider have long since come to seem normal and perfectly clear. Plus, with technical things, I notice people seem to proud to take notes anymore ... and then they forget.

yolos: That part-time gig may actually be the best of both worlds. I've known some people to do that who loved the extra cash and felt that a couple or three days every week or so didn't build up the sense of pressure or the exhaustion that working full time used to do. Hope it works out well for you!

Well, bummer about having to still work beyond your intended date.  However, like Marc said, this might have some mixed blessings.  Regardless, loyalty is rare these days, so you're pretty awesome to help out the way you are.

Ok then, I know you're going to enjoy your... semi-retirement! 

Sudden retirement can have its drawbacks as one has to adjust to all this free time.  Of course, as time goes by, you gradually fill up all that time and in the end working harder than ever and wondering how on earth you had time to go to work.

I have also found that because I live here all the time now, my house gets less and less tidy. All that extra time I have somehow does not get allotted to housework but to other more interesting doings.

My theory is that you have limited time in the morning so you hurry up and get the bed made, the sink cleared and the kitchen floor cleaned and it stays that way until you come back. So there is at least nine hours when no wear and tear occurs.

Well shucks, I was looking forward to your retirement party!

CONGRATULATIONS!  I work from home so the house getting messy has always been an issue.  It's this mysterious thing... when you spend more time in it, it gets more use which makes more mess which equals more cleaning necessary to keep it stable *deep sigh!*

Because I love my work, and I do it from home in my jammies I never intend to retire!  But I think it's wonderful that you're getting to do so.  I bet your garden does as well 

I retired so many years ago I can't count them.  And yes, one wonders how one found time to work.  It is pretty amazing how our time fills up.  Internet doesn't help either.

OK - once again I am being pretty dense.  What is a banner and what is this talk about seeing Audrey's banner?

Thanks Sanderson.  I like to say I have data drop off.  The more I learn the more I forget what came before.  I truly appreciate your help.  As I approach 80 I find myself more indebted to all the younger ones.  This includes you 60 and 70 year olds!

Congratulations yolos - I have been envious of your garden since I signed on to this site. I don't think I will be able to retire until I physically unable to do the job (I am self-employed and I don't think DH and I planned very well for the future). You earned it, go for it!

We need all the help we can get, Rosina. Thank goodness for all the helpful people here, what would be do without them?

 But it never ceases to amaze me that a company expects a retiring person to do more & more especially training up their replacement usually for the same price.

 If you had died in harness so to speak they would have had to work their way round it PDQ without you.

I agree in part with you plantoid, but this company has been especially good to me.  Back in 2012 when I started doing a lot of gardening and found out I could not work full time and have a productive garden, the owner made me an offer I could not refuse.  He cut my work days back to 4 days a week instead of 5 days a week and I received the same pay.  So I feel I owe him some extra help in terms of replacing me.  It was also me who told him it would only take me two weeks to train my replacement.  Boy was I wrong.

Planetoid, very few places do adequate succession training, which is a huge, expensive mistake usually.

I haven't worked at many places that do anything like good training, period. I usually see sink-or-swim paired with an acceptance of high turnover rates of poorly trained workers who make no investment in a company that makes no investment in them. Then those workers often have to try to shoulder the assignments of all the other workers fired in cost-cutting measures, as work product increasingly declines and scheduling goes to pot. Eventually the best workers move on and the firm is left with some combination of the worst and the most desperate and demoralized.

It's always nice to hear of the perfectly workable alternatives, though.

Well Yolos, from 4 days to two.  It is so good that the company has done right by you in the past. I hope they compensate you extra for the extra work. although there is nothing like being home full time.  You are obviously a very valued employee.  Do let us know when you completely out of the harness.
