Really, really lovely. I am so glad that you persevered, IScott. I bet now you are really hooked on this way of gardening.
It is good when we hear of someone who had trouble in the beginning who keeps going and comes out a winner.
Anyone esle needing inspiration, read this thread.

I am so glad you stuck it out! Honestly, everyone learns the first year. Take notes, because this journey is long if we are lucky! Your garden is looking great!
I made so many mistakes my first year, and of course continue to make them! It is a road of discovery...especially things that I like/don't like to eat is interesting....My notes have been invaluable for this year's efforts.
Good job, iscott for not giving it up!

Re: new to SFG and discouraged
My guess is that you launched your SFG project into your existing garden. I might have made that same mistake, too, if my garden soil had been easy to work, but it was heavy with clay and covered with grass. I chose to build the raised bed boxes Mel showed in an old 1981 edition of his book that I had found in buying books for my used book business. The productivity of that first raised bed SFG was phenomenal. I also used the sound of an oncoming rainstorm to increase plant growth potential...just a cheap Cd player radio with a sound audio CD bought online. I found 12-year composted horse manure to amend the planting mix.The raised bed can be easily made by joining 4 4' long boards from 8" wide seconds of cedar fence at about $! per board/ Cheap! I made a very cheap planting mix by layering 3" of tree leaves gathered the previous autumn covered by2"of fresh grass clippings and topped with 2" of garden soil....and then plant in the layered compost pile.

Re: new to SFG and discouraged
Hi Allenheart. Welcome from Atlanta, GA!
I've heard about using sound in growing. Do you think that helped? In what ways?
I saw a documentary about marijuana growing. (To each their own...) One pair of folks uses classical music. And the plants apparently prefered the female. They said that they noticed a definite difference if the female didn't come by at least every 3 days to touch the plants, etc.

Allenheart
from Kelejan in British Columbia.
I also started SFG using the 1981 book, but luckily for me I went on to the Internet the day before I started digging and found a later edition that saved me digging into the ground that would have been impossible due to my rocky property. My book cost my husband 50c and in hindsight it was the most profitable gift he ever gave me even though it took me thirty years before I ever used it.

When adding additional boxes, why not consider elevating them to keep roots out. I had to elevate my 5 beds, best thing I ever did after discovering SFG. I made my elevation heavy duty, others don't need to do this.
And above all else Learn composting and microbes, those two work hand in hand with the SFG program.
