Tulip Bulbs Empty Tulip Bulbs

Post  Kelejan 7/19/2015, 11:48 pm

A little while ago I dug up the expensive pink tulip bulbs I planted in the fall of 2014 and had a nice display of the thirty bulbs.

They dried and I have tidied them up and split them and now have 30 originals to replant.

In addition I have 12 medium bulbs and 34 tiny bulbs.  My intention is to plant these bulbs in a bed and grow them on to make them larger.  Am I doing the right thing?

The reason I dug up the bulbs was that I had not made up my mind as to where they were going to be permanently placed. Should I have left them small bulbs attached to the parents?

If you did not have to cut them to separate, they should be ok. The question is whether you waited to dig til after the greenery died down. The greenery give the bulbs nutrients to bloom next yr.
If I grow tulips here, I have to dig each yr. and put in frig. to get enough months of cold to bloom.

Be sure to decide where you want them to grow, and place in ground before winter or they won't bloom in spring.

If you want blooms in the house, plant 1 in a pot and put in frig. for several months.

littlejo: I just pulled the extras off from the side of the main tulip bulb, no problem there.  I also made sure that all the green had gone from the leaves so no problem there either. And I will do as last year, put them in the ground before winter.

So, thanks for your confirmation that I should be OK for the coming season. Very Happy

No to start on the daffodils. Same thing, I had not made up my mind where to plant them.  All the green leaves have turned to brown and I have now to split them or leave them before replanting before winter.

KJ, I have removed and divided daffodil and tulip flower bulbs after the green died. It has worked well in this Region and is a good way to thin or propagated in new areas.

I had great success with the these pink tulips I bought from Versey's Seeds, a Canadian company.

All thirty bloomed, and as I had planted them in three x 10s groups along the front of my garden facing the road, I noticed several people stopping and just standing looking at them. It warmed my heart. So I am going to do the same this year and have ordered some purple and white ones and will plant them in groups to make a nice display.

I had good luck with tulips fom Michigan Bulb Company. 100% bloomed, and nice size bulbs, not weeny Walmart versions, very healthy. Also nice selection. Brecks is a very tried and true bulb company, more expensive, though, they are imported.

Sometimes, up here anyways, I would side dress or slightly dig in a bit of bone meal around the flowers, that seemed to help year to year eith bloom power. And honestly, I have never separated any of mine, although I am sure they could use it.
