What to plant?
I pulled out my garlic and onions. I have tomatoes, bell peppers and hot peppers growing but lots of empty space. I'm wondering what are good things to plant now?

Hi Mrs. Miller,
I would start by finding out when your first frost of the fall is, then make a list of what you want to eat, and then see if you have enough time to grow that vegetable.
Also consider plants that may be cold tolerant, like collards, kohlrabi, turnips, late potatoes etc.

I am looking at onion for some green onions, spinach, lettuces and carrots. Later, will put in some radishes and more lettuce. Might have time for beets. Swiss Chard us also a good producer into Fall"

Russian and curly kale are the only 2 I have grown. They over winter beautifully here to the point that I was giving it away like others give away zucchini!

Oops! I saw some seeds....of kale. Is there a difference texture or flavor-wise?

It's a matter of preference. I like curly kale to chop up in soups or stir fry. I like the flatter Russian kale sauteed. Right is Rainbow chard, middle the feathery Russian kale, back left the curly kale.

Yes, I see the grass. Aren't they making green grass illegal now in California? 
That Russian Kale looks like the same kind I'm growing. Very fragrant and so incredibly tough -- grows summer and winter, repels bugs, takes a brutal and careless transplanting and cutting-back and comes back strong ... I'm just really impressed by that plant.

I may give it a go, as far as kale. I love Swiss chard, and have a mess of beet greens to fix in my fridge.
